The Thor movies have not always been as well-appreciated as their other Marvel Cinematic Universe cohorts.

The last film in the series, 2013’s Thor: The Dark World, is consistently rated as one of the weakest MCU installments. That might all be changing with Thor: Ragnarok, however. Marvel drafted Taika Waititi, an acclaimed director known for offbeat eccentric films like Hunt for the Wilderpeople and What We Do in the Shadows, to direct the new film, and early trailers indicated that Hemsworth was finally bringing some of his comedic levity to the Thunder God.

Early reactions to Thor: Ragnarok started coming through social media on Monday, and many of them are very praiseworthy. In particular, critics highlighted the humor of the film — and it appears Waititi was able to make his own mark on the MCU. Others called out Tessa Thompson’s Valkyrie and Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk as scene-stealers.
