With the nominations announced today, let's recognize the films the Academy voters won't.

For all the speculation and hype that surrounds them, the Academy Awards are generally pretty predictable. In trying to reward the best out of the thousands of films released each year, Oscar voters tend to recognize the same people and types of films year after year at the expense of other genres and less-established filmmakers.

Admittedly, this year’s slate of frontrunners looks to be a pretty strong one — featuring the likes of Moonlight, La La Land and Manchester by the Sea, to name a few — but as in any other year, the Academy’s usual blind spots will surely keep them from recognizing many worthy others. Here are five deserving films that won’t be raking in awards at this year’s Oscars.

'Edge of Seventeen'

Human-sized stories that rely on everyday emotional stakes don’t often rake in box office dollars these days, but even with that in mind, it’s a shame to see a film as quietly effective as Edge of Seventeen be so overlooked. A coming of age story about a difficult and perpetually frustrated teen who feels authentic because she can’t be easily classified, the film lives and dies on the central performance by Hailee Steinfeld, who perfectly toes the line between insufferable in her self-pity and moving in her frightened vulnerability, as so many real-life teenagers do. Since nobody seems to have seen Edge of Seventeen, Steinfeld may not earn any statuettes this year, but hopefully she’ll continue to prove herself one of the best young actresses working today.
