A Fresh Take on Hip Hop Videos

A bag of Cheetos, kiddie cars and no punctuality.

Please enjoy the early favorite for the best video of 2017:

This has slowly become my most-watched video of the new year. I don't particularly like the song, in fact I kind of detest it, but the lyrics "juxtaposed" over the mishmash of behind the scenes footage, actual footage, and commentary makes it so god damned enjoyable.

Pomp&Clout, the production house that put together this masterpiece of modern storytelling should be in consideration for the Short Documentary Oscar. It's truly a marvel in film-making.

It's got the two things I look for in a video on YouTube -

  1. A simple, yet clever concept.
  2. High production value on the execution of that concept.

I'd love to believe that the entire concept (The star not showing up for the shoot) was built in from the beginning. And if so, BRILLIANT.

However, the idea that an exasperated staff of young filmmakers went into their production studio with barely any actual usable footage to produce a finished project they had budgeted for and came out the other side with this video honestly made my week.

I can just imagine one of their snarky editors putting in placeholder cards almost identical to what we see in the final version (only with 40% more vitriol) and showing the director just how screwed they were when, all of a sudden, the decision was made to just go with it.

At the end of the day, Young Thug was right. I mean, the kiddie cars and the bitches in them make for one hell of a video.

'Til next week.
