It's time for the ladies to bring sexy and violence to extreme!

The women’s wrestling boom in WWE has been something of a rollercoaster ride ever since the Diva’s Revolution hit the main roster last summer. There’s been highs and lows. Some 5-star classics, and some botched matches.

Even through all the struggles, we’re living in the golden age of women’s wrestling. No other time in WWE history has the company had this many talented wrestlers that are legit superstars, able to pull off matches that can steal the show. The roster is stacked as each brand is led by a strong champion. RAW has Charlotte; Smackdown Live has Becky Lynch and NXT has the dominant Asuka. Not only are all three champions great in-ring competitors, but they’re also able to tell compelling stories through their work.

Even with all of these positives happening for the women, why do we still keep getting the same watered-down matches that creative keeps booking? Every week it’s a tag team match, or 3-on-3 or 4-on-4 match. Wouldn’t it be amazing to see a women’s cage match or a women’s table match?! I would gladly watch Sasha Banks v. Bayley or Asuka v. Ember Moon in those type of gimmick matches because, simply, that would be awesome!

So far unfortunately, WWE has deemed these matches suitable only for men. Maybe they think the women will hurt themselves, or that fans aren’t ready to see women go that next level and get vicious just like their male counterparts. Whatever hang-ups WWE has, here are five extreme matches fans want to see the women compete in.

Steel Cage Match – Old School Style

Let the guys have their chain-link fence cage matches, the women will go retro and bring out the old blue bars that were the standard in the 1980s. Every time Saturday Night’s Main Event would roll around or for PPV’s like The Royal Rumble or SummerSlam, the fan-favorite blue-barred steel cage would be used in the headlining match. Hulk Hogan, The Ultimate Warrior, and Macho Man Randy Savage, were just some of the greats that would put on memorable matches inside that confine.

The female wrestlers of today could certainly put on amazing bouts utilizing that vintage structure. The thick bars and spacing is easier to maneuver around in, allowing the women to move and up down the cage quicker. Athletic high flyers like Sasha Banks, Alexa Bliss and Naomi could probably pull off astounding, death-defying moves, forcing us all to break out our best Jim Ross impersonation, yelling “Bah Gawd!”

TLC – Tables, Ladders and Chairs

A tables match is fine. A ladder match is cool. But if you want to see something really spectacular, then you have to watch a Tables, Ladders and Chairs (TLC) match. Part hardcore match, part circus stunt-show, the TLC originated out of the fierce tag team battles with the Dudley Boyz, Edge & Christian and the Hardy Boyz. The first two TLCs, between all six-competitors, are the type of classics you’ll find on “Best of” lists.

Since WWE has a tendency of booking as many women wrestlers as they can in one match, might as well have them fighting it out in a TLC match. WWE creative could book two interesting scenarios with this type of setup. This could be a Survivor Series special where all three brand champions are pitted against one another to determine who is the ultimate women’s champion. The second way to utilize a TLC match would be as a way to introduce a women’s tag team championship. The best incarnations of this match have been built around tag teams, so launching the women’s tag champions in this grueling manner would make the prize that much sweeter!

No Holds Barred

The first time I ever heard of No Holds Barred, it came courtesy of this Hulk Hogan cinematic masterpiece:

Sitting through that movie would make anyone feel as if they had just been in a no disqualification match, but the real match has been a staple in WWE for decades. In a nutshell, a No Holds Barred match — often times called a street fight — throws the rule book out the window. You can basically do or use whatever against your opponent as long as you pin or submit them inside the ring for the win.

In order for a No Holds Barred match to really work, you have to have the right two wrestlers. You want to avoid a dud like Brock Lesnar v. Dean Ambrose. Any combination of The Four Horsewomen (Sasha Banks, Bayley, Charlotte & Becky Lynch) would be fine, but something tells me that Nia Jax would excel in this type of environment. She’s still fairly new to the game but paired up against the right woman and we’d get one hell of a fight.

Strap Match

This one’s gonna leave a mark. Simply put, strap matches are painful. Watching two people whip and choke each other with a large leather strap is less about wrestling and more about sheer brutality. It’s kind of a sadomasochist’s dream activity.

In order to win a strap-match, you have to touch all four ring posts while tied to your opponent via a leather strap. There’s nowhere to run in this match, as the strap can be used as a weapon. That’s what makes the strap unique, in that it literally becomes an extension of the wrestler. A longtime favorite gimmick match in pro wrestling, we’re used to seeing big old cowboys or monstrous wrestlers beating the crap out of each other. That being said, women in other promotions like TNA have competed in the match before.

The women’s roster has the talent to make this match work, but it would be best utilized in a personal feud. Something like Charlotte v. Sasha Banks or Natalya v. Becky Lynch, where both competitors can get nasty and vicious with it.

Elimination Chamber

Somewhere between Hell in a Cell and War Games is the Elimination Chamber, looking like a movie set of a Jean-Claude Van Damme action film. Think of it as a Russian matryoshka made of steel and chains: a cage within a cage within a massive enclosed steel cage. Six participants go in, with two starting it off. The other four wait for their turn, inside small enclosures. It’s very much a mad scientist’s creation.

Going into the match, the women will know that their bodies and souls will pay the price in order to achieve victory. The steel and metal will not be forgiving on their bodies as those bumps will hurt 10 times more. If WWE ever decides to debut the chamber for the women, there’s probably no better place than WrestleMania for them to step inside. Having separate championship matches for both the RAW and Smackdown Live women’s divisions would raise the bar for what to expect in women’s wrestling. Now that’s a way to draw in views!
