Long Island rockers show an edgier side with latest release.

While the boroughs of NYC usually get all the glory, Long Island has a fantastic history when it comes to rock music. Taking Back Sunday, Glassjaw, Dream Theater, Bayside and Brand New all hail from LI, and post-hardcore pop-punk foursome Approaching Troy is looking to be the next band to carry the torch for the area.

On August 19, the rockers will be releasing their latest EP, Best Intentions, and in anticipation of this, Myspace has the exclusive debut of the lyric video for the single, "Sparta (This Isn't Over)."

We caught up with Salazar to find out more about the song.

Since this is a lyric video, tell us about the lyrical content of "Sparta (This Isn't Over)." It sounds like a pretty bad breakup.

It's definitely about a pretty bad breakup. Everybody goes through that one break up in their life that just completely rips their heart out. That's "Sparta" to me.

We thought it was really important to make a lyric video for this song because the lyrics describe a very important aspect of a break up: the denial/acceptance phase. During the chorus, we strongly convey these feelings between the back and forth of vocals, and the repetition of the phrase, "This is forever."

"Sparta," and the EP it's off of, Best Intentions, is a bit of a shift for you, musically. In what ways do you feel your musical growth is most obvious?

We definitely feel a tremendous maturity in our sound, as well as our writing. We weren't afraid to test the waters on Best Intentions, and I really feel like "Sparta (This Isn't Over)" is the best representation of that.

With previous releases, it was more about finding the catchiest hook and planting the most infectious melody into your head. This time around we really sat down and analyzed every note, and every harmony, to try and build upon that infectious vocal melody. We left no stone unturned on this EP, and to bring it all together, we let every influence of ours have a healthy spot in the mix.

Is the whole Sparta / Troy thing completely coincidental, or is there a Trojan War historian in the band?

If I said it was coincidental, I'd be lying to you. The band name derived from my love of Greek mythology, so naturally that's where the title "Sparta" came from, too. Our lyrics aren't about it, and our music videos don't feature the Trojan theme, but we try to embrace it every opportunity we can.

You can catch Approaching Troy on tour August 11-19. All tour dates are listed on the band's Facebook page.
