The trap/dubstep producer brings dancefloor-ready hits "from the dirt."

Apparently if you’re looking for hot new beats, you should stop by Colorado. In particular, Dirt Monkey’s studio, where trap/dubstep producer has crafted 11-track record filled with fusion of genres, buzzing basslines, dramatic melodies and exquisite samples. His new record is called Chroma and it comes out tomorrow, but today you can listen to the exclusive premiere of the track off the record.

Where's your name come from?

It’s pretty simple - I’ve always been into rock climbing, so that’s where the monkey part came from. And I’ve always had a thing for sounds that come from the dirt.

What's your story?

I grew up in Sacramento, starting making beats when I was 15, moved to Colorado when I was 19, learned how to DJ with hip-hop records, started making dance music. Made a name for myself in the Denver/Boulder dubstep scene as it was blossoming. Started a record label called Kairos Audio with my friend Jantsen, and here we are now.15 years in a nutshell for ya.

What should we know about your album?

Chroma is my way of redefining myself as a DJ/producer and attempting to make a long lasting dent in the music scene. I’ve always had mad respect for artists that put out full albums, because that has become a rarity in the EDM world. People like Kill The Noise and Skrillex are super inspiring to me because they release their music in this way, while everyone else just blasts singles out to try and stay in the spotlight as much as possible. I believe what I’ve done with this is the most extreme variety of quality music in one album from one artist. It hits all the genres I love - trap, twerk, dubstep, drum & bass, chill out, future bass, deep house, breaks, garage… I’ve had some people tell me it’s a terrible idea to have that much variety, but I love making all that stuff and feel that I do it well, so the world needs to hear.

Did you ever try to count how many people twerked at your show at the same time?

I actually played a wild show at SXSW a couple years ago where I couldn’t see because literally all the girls in the crowd got on stage and were twerking everywhere, even on top of the DJ booth I was playing on. I’m surprised nothing got smashed.

What's the craziest show you played this summer?

Craziest show I played this summer was Dreamscape Festival in Maryland. Those kids go so hard and the energy was really high.

What's next for you after the album drops?

Got a bunch of music to drop after the album with my homies - Nathaniel Knows, Jantsen, JSTJR, Ruxell. And I guess it’s time to start working on the next album, right?!
