Colorado artist discusses being honest in her music & why she loves performing "No River."

Esme Patterson has been making music for a long time. She co-founded the Denver-based indie-folk band Paper Bird, and also dropped two solo albums — All Princes, I and Woman to Woman. However, her latest album, We Were Wild, proves to be her best. Tapping into her own personal experiences and the world around her, the Boulder, CO singer-songwriter's produced a collection of 12 songs, including "Feel Good" and "No River," that aren't only masterfully crafted soundscapes, but also contain lyrics that will resonate with your own emotions.

Following the release of the album, Esme had a full schedule of tour dates. But we had the chance to catch up with the songstress to find out more about her approach toward the new album, her favorite song to perform and what her plans are for the rest of the year.

Hometown: Boulder, CO

How do you feel We Were Wild is different from your previous solo work?

We Were Wild is my most mature, polished record yet. I am really proud of it. It took the longest time to make of any record I've done.

Your video for "Feel Right" looked like a lot of fun to make. What's the premise behind it?

My dear friend Isaac Ravishankara came up with the idea — we wanted the video to emphasize the discomfort and friction within the lyrics, we wanted the video to make you kinda dizzy. He hit it out of the park on that video. I love it. It was so fun to make.

What is "No River" about?

It's a meditation on getting older, on cutting your losses and being grateful for what you have [and] are.

The songs on this album sound quite personal to you. Are you ever worried about being too vulnerable in your music?

Art that's real and raw is the most interesting to me. Hearing someone be vulnerable in public can be really healing for the listener. I can testify from my own experience as a listener, to see someone be up front and honest about uncomfortable or painful things that we all feel can open those doors within one’s own self to explore vulnerability and healing in our own lives.

What's your favorite song to perform off We Were Wild?

"No River" always makes me really happy when we play it live. I often find myself dancing around with a big grin playing that one.

How's the tour been going?

Tour is horrible and transcendentally beautiful. It's everything all at once. So, I guess my answer is, it's going? It just keeps going.

What's next for Esme Patterson?

I'm excited to keep touring, playing the songs from We Were Wild around the US and the world. I'm starting to map out the next record as well. I've always got something new cooking.
