Before she becomes the next big star, get to know the “Hide Away” songstress a little bit better.

Daya (Day-UH) is a name that you may or may not already be familiar with, but if you’ve turned on the radio or tuned into the pop-focused playlists on your streaming music platform of choice, you have definitely heard her work. She’s the girl behind the poppy tune “Hide Away,” as well as the most recent smash from The Chainsmokers, “Don’t Let Me Down.” She only began her musical career a few months ago but already she’s one of the most exciting new names in the game, and there’s so much more to come.

Before she dominates the radio waves, here are 10 things you should know about Daya.

Her Name Isn’t Really Daya

Daya sounds like a perfectly wonderful name for a young woman, but it’s not this singer’s real one. Many people adopt new monikers when they go into show business, and it could be for many reasons. Daya’s birth name is Grace Martine Tandon, though she opted to come up with something a little more interesting when she began her music career.

“Daya is a translation of Grace in Hindi,” the singer explains, adding that “It actually worked out perfectly, because my grandfather is originally from New Delhi, India, so I'm a quarter Indian.”

She Just Graduated From High School

Most artists spend years just trying to meet the right people and break into the industry, all the while daydreaming of having a hit. Music is typically a younger person’s game, especially when you’re trying to be the next great pop star. Daya is off to a great head start, as she’s only 17, and she’s just finished high school. How long ago did she finish?

“I graduated [in June],” she explains rather matter-of-factly, as if it was no big deal.

When “Hide Away” Was First Released, Her School Stood Behind Her

Before her debut single received any national attention, it was her friends, classmates and even teachers that were adding to the song’s play count, showing her that they supported her musical dreams in the process.

“I remember the first day that it came out and everyone was playing it in the hallways. The teachers were embracing it, and it was really cool how the community was sticking behind me like that and pushing me forward to the next step.”

Both Of Her Hit Singles Were Played At Her Prom

She might have finished high school only a few weeks back, but she’s been charting hits for months now. In fact, while she was rounding out her tenure at school, she was watching her debut hit “Hide Away” climb the singles ranking, and at the same time, she recorded her Chainsmokers collab, and then that also kicked off and sprung up the singles ranking.

She went to her high school prom, and though she couldn’t stay all night (she is a busy pop star now, after all), Daya is “pretty sure they played both,” which is a pretty surreal experience if you think about it.

The Chainsmokers Reached Out To Her For “Don’t Let Me Down”

Believe it or not, she didn’t have to work too hard to get paired up with The Chainsmokers, even though for most people that would be a highpoint in a career.

“They were fans of my song ‘Hide Away,’” Daya says, because it seems like everyone is a fan of that tune. “They reached out to me a couple months ago and asked if I wanted to do a song with them, and we're under the same label. Once I heard the song, I just loved it and I'm really proud of the way that it turned out.”

She Plays Piano And Guitar

During our discussion, Daya made sure to point out that while she is just now becoming known as a pop singer, she isn’t just a pretty face that can handle singing a track in a studio — she’s a musician as well, and not just with one instrument.

“I started with the piano really young. I picked up the guitar and ukulele a couple years ago and played the saxophone for a bit in school.”

Both Of Her Singles Have Already Gone Platinum

As of this June, the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) has declared both of her singles have now gone platinum. It’s incredible for any brand new singer to see their first ever single achieve such a level of popularity (a platinum certification means the track has moved at least one million equivalent units, mixing sales and a new methodology that includes some streaming), let alone two.

Her Album Is Out This Fall

After “Hide Away” was released and began picking up steam online, Daya put out her first ever collection, a self-titled EP. The four-song record has reached as high as number 67 on the Billboard 200, which is a very fair start for such a young talent. It’s been less than a year, but that doesn’t mean Daya is taking her time. In fact, while she did confirm that her as-yet-untitled debut full length album is due this fall, it’s already completed.

“I just heard all the songs together last night, and I can't wait for everyone else to hear it.” According to her, the album features production and songwriting by “some of the same members of the crew that worked on my EP,” as well as “new producers,” though she wouldn’t reveal who just yet.

One Of Her Biggest Influences Is Amy Winehouse

Though the music that Daya has been releasing doesn’t sound much like anything from Amy’s catalogue, that doesn’t mean she can’t be inspired by the late British singer-songwriter. Daya says Winehouse has been a “huge influencer vocally,” describing the latter’s style as “raw and unique.” What singer wouldn’t want to be known for those qualities?

This Is Just The Beginning For Daya

The singer might already have two platinum hits and one of the most successful songs this year, but she is only getting warmed up. Now that she has proven herself and her talent on an indie level, she has the attention of radio promoters, concert bookers and thousands of new fans around the world. It’s highly likely that when her album is finally released there will be a handful of tracks promoted properly, and while many of the better-known female pop divas plot comebacks, the rest of 2016 and perhaps even 2017 could end up belonging to Daya.
