The “Fight Song” hitmaker talks boxing, fishing & turning down cooking show appearances.

Since blowing up last year with the release of her self-empowering anthem “Fight Song” and sharing the stage with Taylor Swift, Rachel Platten turned into one of those pop stars everyone can’t get enough of. Everyone wants a piece of the smiley songstress, so it’s understandably hard to secure a proper conversation with her these days. After months of scheduling drama due to Rachel’s hectic tour life, we finally managed to score a short but laughter-filled phone call from the singer who promised the whole world that she will “Stand by You.” That’s how we learned that she indeed knows how to fight but won’t cook us a meal any time soon.

Hey, Rachel! How are you, where are you and what are you up to right now?

I’m fantastic, thank you so much. Right now I just finished the Today Show—I did the Summer Concert series. I’m sitting in my green room about to go meet all of my fans.

What’s the coolest thing you got in that green room? How wild is your rider?

A must have is hot water and lots of healthy snacks.

What was your favorite song when you were 13 and what’s your favorite song now?

Favorite song when I was 13 was “Like a Prayer” by Madonna. I remember dancing to it at a lot of Sweet 16’s and Bah Mitzvahs. My favorite song now is… “Like a Prayer”. Okay, kidding. It’s “Hurt Me” by Lapsley.

We all know the opening line for “Fight Song”: “Like a small boat on the ocean…” So if you were stuck on a small boat in the ocean for let’s say a month, what would you be doing there? Writing? Playing board games with yourself?

Ha, probably not playing games with myself. I think I’d be writing music. Hopefully I’d have a piano or a guitar on that little boat. And a journal! I’d be trying to come up with the next “Fight Song.”

Did you ever go to a fighting class? Like karate or muay thai.

I do. I do a lot of kickboxing actually. And I do some real boxing in LA. I love it!

Since your album is called Wildfire, did you ever start a wildfire in the kitchen or are you a good, well-behaved cook?

Haha. I am not a well-behaved cook! I actually got asked to be on a cooking show and I really wanted to do it, but I had to turn it down because I knew it would be a humongous embarrassment at the lack of skills that I have in the kitchen.

Maybe that’s what you’re gonna be doing on that small boat—catching fish and learning how to cook it.

Oh, definitely getting fish, yeah!

You have a song called “Astronauts,” so if you were indeed an astronaut and was sent to space to find a new planet to create a better place, what would that world look like?

Oh god, you’re the most incredible interviewer I have ever had. I don’t even know what that place would look like! How do I answer that?! You’re fucking awesome though!

Same to you, Rachel! Enjoy the meet and greet with the fans and don’t forget to invite us to your fish dinner.

Deal!
