Grittiness, crime and the origins of hip-hop in the Bronx circa the '70s will define The Get DownIn the new teaser for the Baz Luhrmann-directed Netflix original series, rapper Nas reflects on the tumult of the times: 

"It was maximum crime," says the rapper. "We had to rumble with rivals on the rubble while buildings around us would crumble."

The musical drama dives into the birth of hip-hop—as well as the punk and disco explosion—in New York City. 

Luhrmann has said that Nas, who wrote the rhymes sung by the main rapper (played by Daveed Diggs) in The Get Down, was a "huge creative force in the production."

Jaden Smith, Shameik Moore (Dope), Giancarlo Esposito and Jimmy Smits also star in the show.
