Wrestlers compete on cheesy, classic game shows to determine their fate in the ring!

Getting wished the best in your future endeavors is either the worst thing a WWE Superstar can hear or an opportunity at a career revival. On May 6th, the WWE released 8 superstars, with the most notable names being Damien Sandow and Wade Barrett. Every year after WrestleMania, the rumor mill starts churning as the WWE thins out its roster by doing some spring cleaning. Even now, there’s speculation that more talent could be let go shortly.

Considering that, in the past, the company has spun this touchy time into profit - by trademarking and selling ‘future endeavors’ shirts - I’m surprised they haven’t gone a step further. The WWE has Tough Enough, a reality competition show, to find new superstars. WWE logic would assume that they should have a show to see which veterans get to keep their job! I know this might sound cruel or mean-spirited, but this is pro wrestling. There is no such thing as good taste or boundary lines where cash is king.

A game show of wrestlers on the bubble would be must-see TV for the WWE Network. I’m not talking about current fare like Survivor or American Ninja Warrior. No, this would be the old-school format, where the contestants would have to depend on ridiculous games of luck, rather than on physical abilities.

With a thin microphone in one hand and a stack of card questions in the other, let’s welcome these contestants and have them play classic game shows to see if they should stay or go!

Ryback, Come On Down!

Our first contestant is “The Big Guy” Ryback (real name - Ryan Allan Reeves), who - due to a contract dispute with the company - is almost out the door. Backstage at Raw on May 2, he let Vince McMahon know about his frustrations with his character’s direction and issues with pay. On top of that, he made his grievances public on social media, which surely doesn’t sit well with Vinnie Mac.

For “The Big Guy,” the show of choice is The Price is Right and the game is Plinko. After debating between this and Cliff Hangers, seeing the massive Ryback dropping chips on the board is too good to pass up. Unfortunately, the chip would fall into the space marked ‘Fired’.

Ryback is a throwback to when big muscles and size were king. That’s not the market anymore. He never really got over with fans, who always hounded him with “Goldberg” chants.  While he’s never going to be a main event money guy, Ryback is a good mid-card heel. Going to New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) or Ring of Honor (ROH) makes sense, allowing him to really develop as a heel character.

Curtis Axel, The Survey Says…

Third generation wrestler Curtis Axel (real name - Joseph Curtis Henning) lands on my mother’s favorite game show, Family Feud. Representing the Henning family, he fails to land the number one answer on the big board for the category: “Name a gimmick that will get you over.”

What hasn’t the WWE tried to do with this guy?! From being a member of Nexus to having Paul Heyman manage him and now being in The Social Outcasts, they’ve tried almost every angle. He’s been an Intercontinental and a tag-team champion. This issue is, he’s rather blah. For Mr. Perfect being his father, he wasn’t blessed with dad’s charisma or ‘it’ factor. With NXT talent being called up to the main roster, Axel will just keep getting lost in the shuffle. Like his former Nexus buddy Ryback, the best thing for him is to hit the indie circuit and come up with a character that works for him. Time away is the only way he’ll revive his career.

You Are The Weakest Link, Goodbye.

I’m still trying to figure out how Rosa Mendes (real name - Milena Roucka) is on the WWE roster. She was never a wrestler. She’s not a good character. And she’s horrible on the mic. All that’s left is for her to exit stage left.

Is It Door No. 1 or Door No. 2, Fandango?

Disco Inferno, Alex Wright, Flash Funk… dancing gimmicks Never Get Over! Fandango (real name - Curtis Hussey) is the latest to be added to that list of dancing fools. He started off white-hot the night after WrestleMania 29, when his theme song went viral with the WWE Universe. But that’s been the only noteworthy thing in his career.

You’d think Dancing With The Stars would be the show for him, but Let’s Make a Deal is what he needs. He can stay with the dancing gimmick or choose what’s behind the curtain. If he's smart, he’d denounce the dancing character and do a 180. The WWE should give him free reign to come up with a gimmick that’s more in tune with Hussey's personality. At this point anything is better than falling into obscurity as a dancing wrestler.

Stardust Gets Whammied!

The 80’s show Press Your Luck had you pressing a button and hoping for big bucks or a prize instead of the dastardly Whammy! Sorry Stardust (real name - Cody Runnels), but your cosmic luck has run out.

Simply put, Cody Rhodes needs to return. As much as I’ve enjoyed the comic book character of Stardust, it’s time for a change. The son of “The American Dream” Dusty Rhodes, is a talented performer in the ring and on the mic. Doesn’t matter which gimmick the WWE has pushed on him, Cody has made it work. He had a feud with The Green Arrow for crying out loud!

Keep It Tight

Considering I see Jack Swagger (real name - Donald Jacob Hager Jr.) on the YouTube channel, UpUpDownDown more than on WWE TV, the challenge for him is Gamer Gauntlet. Doesn’t matter what viral internet food challenge Xavier Woods throws in front him, just lose Jack.

When people forget you’re with the company, it’s time to go. Don’t be surprised if Swagger ends up in Lucha Underground and thrives.
