Though the Finnish girl-pop duo’s latest single is called “Rookie,” LCMDF is anything but.

From communicating with Miike Snow on Myspace back in the day to becoming one of the biggest groups to come out of Finland, Emma & Mia Kemppainen are most known for their jovial brand of pop music. Recently, they released "Rookie," a song that criticizes the male-dominated music business. While not all women believe in equality or classify as feminists, these sisters surely do. We chatted with Emma about the new track, what they’ve been listening to lately, and why anyone with common sense should consider themselves a feminist.

"Rookie" is full of take-charge, empowering lines. Who are these dudes that think they are better than you?

"Rookie" is an empowerment anthem. It can really be for anyone, girls or boys. It’s mainly criticizing the male-dominated music business. We have a very low percentage of female artists at the music festivals in Finland. And that’s just a small part of a bigger problem.

Do a lot of young girls listen to your music? Are you interactive with your fans?

We have a lot of young girls and boys who listen to our music, and we’re really interactive, just tweet us and we’ll probably tweet back.

Is “Rookie” a part of a full project?

"Rookie" is a single from our up and coming second full-length album.

Personally, I fell in love with your music when I heard "Procrastination 365.” Did you have a lot of fun recording the track and making the music video?

It was fun to record, and the video was made real DIY. I edited the backgrounds myself, took me like a week!

Your music seems to have a lot of "girl power" nuances. Do you consider yourselves (active) feminists?

I wonder how many times bands with dudes get asked if they’re feminists. If you know what the word feminist really means, it is common sense to be a feminist. Though that’s not the main goal with LCMDF. The main goal is to be great artists and musicians in an awesome band.

Are there 2 or 3 of you? (I saw three people on your Wikipedia page.)

We used to be three girls in the band when we started; we had a French name Le Corps Mince de Francoise (roughly translated to Francoise's skinny body) we early on picked up a lot of listeners on Myspace and a big audience in France.

The band changed its name to LCMDF and became a duo in January 2010. Later that year we released the first single “Gandhi” of our debut album Love & Nature on Heavenly Recordings.

What are you ladies listening to these days?

We’re listening to a wide selection of tastemaker indie and electronica—Flume, PC music, Hudson Mohawke and Scandinavian tunes like Death Team, Little Jinder, Madi Banja and Lorentz, combined with chart pop such as Taylor Swift and Ellie Goulding. I’m really into EDM. I like to listen to Galantis, Madison Mars, Duck Sauce and Martin Solveig when I work out. And then I have a funny obsession with weird old disco tunes as well.

You two are blood sisters. Any sibling rivalry when you're on tour?

We’ve been in the band for 10 years since Mia was 15 and I was 17, so we had really sorted out our sibling things a long time ago. Now we work in a symbiosis with our own tasks and creative input to the band. Mia is really the best person to work with I know.

Are you two meticulous about how you appear on social media?

Our band would probably not exist in today's form without social media. We had a breakthrough in 2009 on Myspace and and are now very active on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat. I liked the old school Myspace, because you could modify the profile with HTML and you had the player on the site. There isn’t really another platform like that. Our Instagram is pretty fine right now, though.

Do you have any special collaborations in the works or tour news that you could share with us?

There is really cool stuff about to happen in 2016, and we hope to get invited over to the US soon!

You've been in the business for well over a decade, and you've probably seen and heard it all. Are there any things that still surprise you when it comes to the business?

It still surprises me how much power the major labels have. But that will probably change at some point. Hopefully…

Are girl pop duos popular in Finland?

No, we’re the only one since Nylon Beat in the ‘90s [laughs]. There’s a rap duo called sofa and a pop duo called PMMP. We’re more like a band… and there’s a lot of bands with two dudes, like disclosure, hurts, justice…

Share an early Myspace experience or a fun fact about Myspace.

We had around 4k daily plays in the player and a million page views on our page back in 2008! And Miike Snow once sent us a fan letter via our Myspace inbox.
