Pablo Picasso's great-grandson explores sonic shadows on his latest track 'The Final Cut'

If Florian Picasso has one thing going for him, it is name recognition. Pablo Picasso’s great-grandson composes and performs progressive house music as his chosen mode of expression. Outside of the French Mediterranean and the Swiss Alps where he splits his residence, Picasso has kept a mostly unknown status -- at least as much as his name allows. But a lot has happened over the course of this year. He grabbed Steve Aoki’s attention with his intricate house anthem “Origami,” which primed the 26-year-old producer and DJ for summertime festival appearances.

His latest track, “Final Cut,” is a follow-up that holds its own and then some. In it, you can hear Florian develop a signature aesthetic -- lush and powerful, the production suiting the mood for the beachfront nightclubs that inspire the young recording artist. Don’t get it twisted, however; the song is a lament about lost love and the ensuing personal struggle. Myspace spoke with him more about his new material and his artistic approach to what has become his signature style of EDM.

Hometown: Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Homebase: I live between Cannes (France) and Geneva (Switzerland).

How did you get interested in producing and DJing?

I started DJing around 13 years-old looking at other DJs in movie clips, it was more for the profile before. Then I fell in love with it, and producing was the next step. For over 10 years, I knew I wanted to do this.

What's your favorite city in the world to play in?

Each city has its own charm. We have ups and downs so far. For example, I loved playing in Chambery (a small French city) for Pharaonic Festival because of the energy!

Who would you love to collaborate with?

I would love to collaborate with Kaskade, DJ Snake, Skrillex, Galantis.

Whose songs do you love to remix?

Banks, Aurora, Lorde.

Which artists do you enjoy listening to and inspire you?

I listen to different type of music when I'm not producing. A lot of pop actually. I’m a Belieber.

Does being related to Pablo Picasso influence your music at all?

Not my music, but my perspective of creation.

What is "Final Call" about?

“Final Call” is a sad track about saying goodbye to a loved one because he or she is going to a better place.

What's the craziest thing that's happened to you as a DJ/producer so far?

My Japanese fam taking me to the best places in Tokyo. Such an experience doesn't sound crazy to some people, but my definition of crazy is about discovering new things and getting different crazy in me.

How would you describe your style of music to someone who'd never heard you before?

Unique and fresh.
