Why fans of the cult cartoon should watch and have a blast with the current women's division.

Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch are both immensely talented athletes who are also changing the game for women’s wrestling. But recently, while watching a match between both competitors, I had an epiphany. I’d seen this sort of entertainment before: the neon colored hair, the outrageous fashion, and the glamour and glitter personalities.  What I’ve come to realize is that the WWE Women’s Division has turned into Jem and the Holograms.

Like a time warp to my childhood, these badass wrestlers have given live-action form to the animated cult classic. This in turn has added an extra level of enjoyment watching them perform.

Now most of you are probably thinking, What the hell are you talking about? First of all, what I’m NOT talking about is that embarrassingly bad film that came out last year. For the uninitiated, Jem and the Holograms is a cartoon from the 1980s revolving around a girl named Jerrica Benton. With the help of a holographic computer (probably something Apple is working on) named Synergy, she transforms into the pink-haired mega rockstar Jem. Joined by her sister and friends, the Holograms, the band travels the world performing and having “truly outrageous” adventures, while battling the likes of evil music executive Eric Raymond and rival group the Misfits.

It’s a bit of a head-scratcher how an alpha, pillar of masculinity such as myself, would be well-versed in an '80s cartoon aimed at girls?! Well, that’s where the joys of having a little sister comes into play. I had the luxury of sharing TV time with my younger sister who was a huge fan of the cartoon. She had the dolls, coloring books, and would continuously rent the same videotape of the show.

Even by today’s standards the cartoon is epic and crazy, which are two words that could be used to describe the WWE. Replace the music industry for the world of professional wrestling and you have two worlds where wacky and wild characters’ flourish.

Here’s a few ways how both shows are basically one and the same:

Jem/Jerrica Benton – Sasha Banks

Well gee, who could be the WWE’s own Jem? There’s only one pink-haired goddess who gets fans revved up while delivering top-notch performances. That’s “The Boss” Sasha Banks, arguably the leader of the women’s division. The lead singer of the band, if you will. Stunning, oozing charisma and one of the best wrestlers in the world, she’s reached the megastar level of Jem. The flip-side is that a few years ago, just like Jerrica, Banks was that everyday girl aspiring for greatness.

Don’t be surprised if one day “The Boss” is sporting those iconic red star earrings Jem is known for, as she makes her way to the ring with the WWE Women’s Championship around her waist.

The Holograms – Becky Lynch, Bayley, Paige & Naomi

The Holograms consist of Jem’s kid sister Kimber and her best friends Aja, Shana and Raya. The girls are basically “the good guys” of the show, always there for Jem/Jerrica when she needs help. The WWE version has a group of fierce and glamorous women, living the fashion and fame lifestyle like their animated counterparts.

Even though they’re not sisters, Banks and Lynch have a long history of feuding and teaming together. That bond, and shared loved of neon colored hair, keeps the rivals united. Fellow “Horsewoman” and all-around huggable personality Bayley brings the fun, while wildcard Paige and the underrated Naomi, are glam ready, having participated in a Jem and the Holograms inspired photo-shoot.

Pizzazz – Charlotte

Every hero needs a villain and in Sasha’s case, that’s the spawn of “The Nature Boy” Ric Flair, Charlotte. Leader of the Misfits, Pizzazz is the ultimate '80s bad girl, with a green mane of hair to boot. Granted, Charlotte doesn’t have green hair but a quick stop to the salon will fix that. She and Pizzazz share a nasty attitude and a habit of continuously using underhanded tactics to get what they want.

The current women’s champ is aggressive, arrogant and selfish, all qualities that Pizzazz would applaud. As long as she’s the center of attention and holding onto the new Women’s Championship, Charlotte will keep collecting enemies.

The Misfits – Eva Marie, Alexa Bliss & Summer Rae

Comprised of Roxy, Stormer and Jetta, these ladies are foes to Jem and the Holograms. In putting together three conniving and cruel competitors for the WWE’s version, we didn’t have to look hard. Hated by fans young and old and with Twizzlers colored-red hair, Eva is in. Now, I love me some Alexa Bliss. She’s the ultimate mean girl, who will never give you the time of day. And finally there’s the resident troublemaker and guy chaser Summer Rae, who would quickly turn her back on you if the situation called for it.

Rio – Xavier Woods

Rio is the purple-haired lothario dating both Jerrica and her alter ego Jem. Who could be suave enough to catch Sasha’s eye? None other than the WWE’s own fanboy/geek, Xavier Woods. Truth be told, Woods was the runner-up to be our Jem, having cosplayed as her before, as seen here:

And here:

Eric Raymond – Vince McMahon

Raymond’s design is spot-on to Vince McMahon in the '80s, with the Wall Street power suit and fluffy hair. I bet one of the show’s writers was watching Saturday Night’s Main Event, when they found inspiration for their unscrupulous businessman in pro wrestling’s own, power hungry villain.

Does McMahon have a devious plan in mind to stop Sasha? Most likely, but at least he’ll do it in style as he power-walks like this:

Synergy – Paul Heyman

When Jem’s in a jam, she turns to the AI known as Synergy. Think part Yoda part Genie. When a WWE wrestler needs career help, they turn to one person. His name is Paul…E…Heyman. He may not wear a headband and purple leotard, but Pauly’s magic is just as good.

It’s Showtime, Synergy...err...Paul!

Jaimie Rain I too grew up having to share the after school T.V with older cousins. So Jem has always been firmly engraved in my memory which is not a bad thing at all. Sweet valley high and the Babysitters club though...urgh..
