Dutch house duo talks spaceships, Jaeger shots and playing at temples.

Not every house act is allowed to pick a name as self-assured as Firebeatz, but this Dutch duo has certainly proved that it is indeed capable of setting any dance floor on fire. Ever since then-students Tim and Jurre decided to join forces back in 2008, they’ve been constantly releasing bombastic tunes and collaborating with the likes of Tiesto, Calvin Harris, DubVision and many others. They’re kicking off 2016 with the bass-influenced Schelle collaboration, "Dat Disco Swindle," which drops on Monday (February 15). We called the ever-busy musicians to talk about the new release and to finally put an end to the ancient-long mystery: Can anybody outdrink Tiesto?

In short, what’s the story of Firebeatz?

Jurre: We met at the producing school in 2008. We were in the same class and had an assignment to work together. And that worked out pretty well. Our teacher really liked our track and introduced us to the Be Yourself Music label. The track actually got released and we decided to get along with it.

Good teacher you had! What about other classmates?

Tim: Let me think… Our class had five students. One of them dropped out. He was a minimal tech house DJ. Other guy was more into hip-hop, he’s doing his thing and we keep in touch. And the last guy sings and produces, but he’s not on the house scene.

Let’s talk about the new single, "Dat Disco Swindle." What’s the inspiration here?

Tim: We were inspired by the old housey sound and started working on more stuff like that. We also love a lot of the bassy UK stuff, we got influenced by that, too. And we’re always trying to make one track per year with Schella, he’s a very good friend of ours. So it was time to make another one of those!

How do you feel when you listen to your older records like Funky Shit now?

Jurre: It’s funny [laughs]. It’s good to listen to some older tracks. Every track had a special story so it’s good to relive it.

Tim: Of cause production-wise we want to change million things, because we’re so much better now in producing and mixing. But we still love all the ideas.

Do you always test your music live before deciding to release the tracks? Or only the big singles?

Tim: We test all of them. We always give them a couple of plays in clubs before we release it. Out tactic is ‘Let’s play it first and if there’s something in, record it’. It’s always good to hear it on the floor. It comes across different than on your studio speakers. I would recommend it to everyone.

You were involved in lots and lots of collaborations. Which ones stand out? The one with Calvin Harris, maybe?

Jurre: There were a lot! Calvin Harris was very special for us, because it’s Calvin Harris. It was an enormous honor. KSHMR was nice, too. We went over to his studio in LA, hung out with him, ate a lot of sushi, made a track. The funny thing was that he really blew off right after our track got released. We’re really proud of that collaboration. And Tiesto, he’s the Godfather. Martin Garrix, too, we still play our track at every set.

Talking about Tiesto... You once said that every time you see him, he gets you to drink Jaeger shots. So is he the best DJ to get drunk with? Can anybody outdrink him?

Tim: Ooh, no, I’ve never seen somebody outdrinking him. He’ll drink all night and then he’s up in the morning at 8 or 9, having breakfast, working out. I don’t know how he does it. He’s a machine.

You’re not like that yet, right? You still need some time to learn the art of drinking…

Tim: Well, we’re not that bad!

Okay, I believe you. Do you have any studio rituals? Maybe a snack before recording? A prayer?

Tim: I don’t have a particular one, no, I just try to drink a cup of coffee, that’s it.

Jurre: We always try to have a good lunch, too.

Maybe a Jaeger shot once you’re done?

Tim: Yeah [laughs].

Do you have any advices for the people going to see your shows at the festivals? Like what shoes to wear, where to stand, etc?

Tim: Bring battery backup for your phone. And if you don’t have one, go to the merchandize stand and get a Firebeatz one [laughs]. And just go crazy. Don’t do drugs!

Okay: go crazy, no drugs, Firebeatz charger. Now I’m ready for your show. Talking about shows, let’s imagine you were given unlimited budget for your gig. What would you do?

Tim: I would build the sickest production ever. A spaceship that actually goes to space and we’ll play on the moon. First DJs to play on the moon!

But if we’re back to Earth: what’s the weirdest place you ever had to play at?

Tim: We were at Bali in Indonesia. And they had us play at that old temple between mountains. They lit up the place with all sorts of lights of all those different colors all over all these statues. It was a magical place! One of the highlights for sure.

A truly religious experience, I hear you! Did you ever set anything on fire though? On stage or off stage?

Jurre: Off stage, definitely! We went to this place once and set the whole place on fire.

Just for fun?

Tim: For the video. You can check it out in our teaser for the video "Tornado."

You have to be a pretty stylish person to look good on stage and both of you rock some nice outfits all the time. What brands and trends do you follow? If any…

Tim: We like a couple of brands actually. Rick Owens, Boris Bidjan Saberi, Nike, Adidas, Y3, Fear of God, Denham, Off-white, Filling Pieces.

A couple, haha. What do you do back home when you’re not on the road and have some time for yourself? Do you just sleep?

Jurre: Chill, have some good dinner with friends. I like soccer. Gaming. Just relax, actually.

Tim: We also work a lot when we’re home [laughs]. For free time—working out and gaming. I’d just sit on the couch and play.

What else do you have planned for 2016?

Tim: Miami’s coming up, we’re gonna do lots of fun stuff there. We’re gonna do studio sessions for the couple of weeks in LA in April. Some personal stuff for our fans to check out on our social media. Can’t say too much about that—just keep an eye.

You’re gonna burn something, am I right?

Together: Yes!
