We needed all of this after the week that was.
It’s been a somber week, and while most of us appreciate outlets flooding our pages with pictures of puppies and baked goods to get us through it, we need a little more pick-me-up. Thanks to some gifts from the pop culture gods, it seems as though we might very well be back on the road to recovery. Here’s what you missed over the weekend.
Dave Chappelle's Triumphant Return to TV
For the first episode to air following the rollercoaster of an election, Saturday Night Live lent this weekend’s highly coveted hosting responsibilities to none other than Dave Chappelle. The elusive comedian didn’t disappoint, and his ability to make an audience breakout into fits of laughter is still matched by very few. Before he took on The Walking Dead’s Negan with the help from good ol' Tyrone, he led into the episode with an uplifting sermon dedicated to those who felt downtrodden after last week’s political outcome.
In the most elegant and humorous opening soliloquy, Chappelle decided to shine a light on the current situations across the United States with people protesting Donald Trump’s victory in becoming the next President. He too found himself in disbelief over the results — not because he didn’t see it as a possibility — but because Hillary seemed to have such favorability amongst the masses. “I watched a white riot in Portland, Oregon, on television the other night. The news said they did $1 million worth of damage. Every black person was watching it like, ‘Amateurs.’” He ended his speech by saying that although he doesn’t like the current state of things, that he is willing to give Trump a chance to prove himself, but that we as a nation should expect the same in return.
