Bay Area hip-hop artist is on his way to being a mixtape king but will still pick you up for a ride.

The Bay Area has always been a hotbed for hip-hop, giving us countless great acts, such as E-40, Lil B and Hieroglyphics, just to name a few. Larry June is looking to add his name to that list of luminaries.

Harnessing an incredible work ethic that has led to more mixtapes than many artists release in an entire career, June’s life up to this point hasn’t been without its share of trials and tribulations, including one literal trial.

Here are 10 things you should know about Larry June.

He Comes From a Musical Family

June was pretty much destined to be in music in some way, shape or form. Throughout his childhood, he remembers his mother was always singing, and his father owns the independent rap label The Road Records.

His Hustle is Reflected in His Growing Discography

As of this interview, June has released seven mixtapes, and he says that’s just the tip of the iceberg. “I got a new EP coming out, the Larry EP part two. I recently dropped the Larry EP, that’s doing pretty good. I dropped Orange Season, as well.”

When it comes to an official full length album, he says he’s working his way up to it. “The album is more down the line a little bit,” he explains, “I’m trying to get to that level.”

He Shops at Whole Foods

June’s music features lyrics about Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s, and those references are no joke. Not only does he shop at those places, he says that if you take a look in his shopping cart you’ll find an array of healthy options. “I might get some fresh oranges, some avocados, some flaxseed oil, some grape seed oil, multivitamins, chicken wings, macaroni, juice, organic Cheerios. I go hiking, too.”

One of His Cars is a Prius

Although rappers are known for having flashy rides, June says there’s a Prius in his personal fleet. “I have a Prius. A secret Prius, cuz a nigga tryna save gas. It’s that simple.”

He Could be Your Lyft Driver

If you’ve been waiting for your Lyft ride to arrive and see June’s Prius pull up next to you, hop in, he’s your driver! While he says he doesn’t play his own music in the car, he notes, “I might smoke with you.”

He was Kicked Out of High School

Many outlets have reported June was banned from every high school in Vallejo, CA. The truth of the matter is he was kicked out because he didn’t go to class. “I got too many truancies,” he explains, “I had to go to another district.”

While a change in districts didn’t change his feelings regarding going to school, June says, “I’m doing good. I got a couple of BMWs, and a nice house.”

He Beat a Suspicion of Drug Trafficking Charge

Calling it “a learning experience,” June remembers the situation, saying, “It was suspicion of drugs just because I had a large amount of money on me, and not even that much stuff on me. I guess I was Black, and having too much money on me. It was all bogus. I was driving, and they said my car was stolen. Everything’s good now. It was a horrible suspicion. Everything was all false.”

He Rocked an Interesting Look to Court

Even though his lawyer told him his presence wasn’t required in court, June wanted to be there when his fate was decided. “I was there,” he remembers, “I just had sweatpants on in the back. (My lawyer) told me don’t come, but I wanted to hear it for myself.”

He Credits His Son for Changing His Life

June became a father at the age of 20, and this sparked a complete reassessment of his life. “I changed everything about my life,” he remembers. “That’s when everything got serious. I had to start preparing to be a father. I started taking things more seriously and working harder. That did nothing but help me, so I’m grateful for that.”

He Keeps It Real with His Son

While some might feel it would be difficult, or awkward, to talk to their child about staying in school when they, themselves, didn’t follow that advice, June says, “I encourage my son to stay in school, get good grades, all that good, positive, stuff – everything I didn’t do.” Adding, “You gotta explain to him the real. Can’t hide nuttin. Everybody can’t do what I did. I’m explaining to him everything at five years old. I keep it completely real about everything.”
