The British quartet’s music has electronic yet spiritual elements that come from an organic place.

Liskka’s first single after the release of their self-titled debut is called “Keep Me Awake.” It’s an ethereal, cinematic song that uses as much electronic sequencing as it does real instruments such as the oboe and trumpet. Most of the band’s existence has been a dichotomy of sound, taking its cues from glitch-pop, RnB and techno while sounding nothing like those genres as a whole. Made up of members Susie Wedderburn, Hannah Ashman, Rick David and Jana Tyrrell, Liskka creates a sound that, according to Tyrrell, comes from “whatever instruments we play and how we feel like playing them. It sounds simplistic but it really comes from an organic, natural place.” Tyrrell talks to Myspace about where their name is from, their love of Little Dragon, and dealing with technical difficulties on stage.

Hometown and homebase: London

Why are you called Liskka?

We wanted a name that wasn't already taken by a band, and one that didn't sound clichéd. As we all speak English we decided to go for something that wasn't; 'Liška' which is a Czech word, meaning fox (and is also a surname). It also relates to me who is part Czech.

How did you all meet and what made you all decide to form a band?

Susie, Hannah and I met through university and friends, and we found Rick through the Internet when we asked him to mix a song for us. Liskka came together as a natural collaboration rather than a band which we all decided to form, we all just had a strong urge to play, perform and record and do it through the band.

Are you all classically trained musicians? There’s a method to the looseness you hear in “Keep Me Awake.”

None of us really grew up in musical households, but we each studied music either at university, in solo music lessons or music college. I think we all have a natural love of music and we have all been playing instruments from a young age, it's always been about music for us!

Who are your biggest musical influences?

We don't have any one particular big musical influence as a band. The genres we listen to range from world music to classical and metal. But we all love Little Dragon!

Describe your music to someone who's never heard you before.

That's always hard because we find our music unique! We'll go with what other people have said — they always say it's trippy, Scandinavian-sounding, electronic and beautiful.

Does being from London influence your music at all?

The best part about London is the diversity and the fact there is always something happening, so overall growing up here has allowed to be exposed to all types of music and scenes, which is very inspirational.

Tell us some crazy band stories.

The scariest thing that has happened to us is on stage, when all of our equipment malfunctioned at once! We literally had to stop playing and reset the whole thing in front of the audience. It's all good experience though.
