Make no mistake, though—this frog doesn't have a "new girlfriend."

Back in May, ABC announced its brand new "docuseries" The Muppets. With that, the network promised to go behind the scenes of another Muppets series, Up Late. But no one could have predicted that The Muppets would lead to Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy's split after dating for 40 years, much less them seeing other people.

Yesterday, ABC published photos of Kermit with his reported new girlfriend, Denise from marketing. She is a pig too, though she isn't blond like Miss Piggy, but brunette. "She's always stopping by the set of Up Late," a source said to PEOPLE. "He calls her his girlfriend."

Once Kermit caught wind of the headlines, however, he issued a statement. "While I prefer to keep my personal life private, this is Hollywood, so who am I kidding?" he says. "It is true that I am dating again. However at this time no one woman—'pig' or otherwise—is my official 'new girlfriend.' We are simply close friends."

How is Miss Piggy taking the news? Just fine, evidently. Yesterday she told William Shatner on Twitter that she is "very much available," adding, "I'd love to boldly go where no pig has gone before." The day before, Liam Hemsworth joined Instagram; his first post was a photo of himself and Miss Piggy, gazing into each other's eyes.

So while news of their breakup was heartbreaking, to see Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy dating other people is, well, something else. Play on, Muppets, play on.
