Hip-hop trio from Queens unveil new single, 'Want It All'

Oxymorrons, an alternative hip-hop group from Queens, New York, call themselves that because “Oxymoron is a figure of speech in which apparently contradictory terms appear in conjunction.”  And yes, the band, made up of brothers Deee and K.I., alongside drummer Matty Mayz, juxtapose different genres into their own brand of alternative hip-hop. Growing up, they listened to so many bands— from Nirvana, Blink 182, Queen. “We have had our minds blown by music so much through the years, our ears are kind of musically promiscuous,” band said.

Live music also plays a major role in Oxymorrons’ sound; the trio first got their break opening for Lupe Fiasco, and since then has shared a stage with Gym Class Heroes, Ludacris, Common, Juicy J, B.o.B, and Outkast. Recently signed to Tommy Boy Entertainment (same label as Method Man!), they’re releasing a new album, Complex but Basic, in the fall. Deee and K.I. talk to Myspace about crazy fans, their relationship with Lupe Fiasco and Gym Class Heros, and what they do for fun.

How would you describe your music to someone who's never heard you before?

Outkast meets N.E.R.D , Kid Cudi and Rage Against the Machine.

What’s your musical background and how did you get into hip-hop?

Our dad was really into music; he played the piano and introduced us to all kinds of music. It was our older brother who introduced us to hip-hop and taught us how to rap. He had a recording deal himself.

How did you meet Matty, your drummer?

We were managed by a company called Pilot Creative, and Matty Mayz was an intern there. He was assigned to us and a time came where we were in need of a drummer and he said he could play and the rest is history.

Why is your album called Complex But Basic?

The title embraces the dualities of life and embodies the artistic freedom that flows through our music. We did not allow ourselves to be bounded by genres. We created each song to express the complexities of ourselves but also our basic love of music as an art form.

What's the best thing about being hip-hop artists from Queens?

Queens is the most diverse borough in NYC. It's so cultured with so many different ethnic groups it's like a melting pot for creativity. Think about how many huge influential artists come from Queens.

You've toured with some amazing people. Who are your favorites and why?

Gym Class Heroes and Lupe. Lupe because he was the first major artist we had opened up for. He is such a cool guy and so talented. Gym Class are life family. Those guys took us under their wing and treated us like brothers. Travie has been come a great friend and big bro. Matt their drummer and our drummer are close, and touring with them was amazing. They understand being a alternative hip-hop band.

Who is your dream collaborator at the moment?

We would love to collaborate with Kid Cudi, Craig Wells, Twenty-one Pilots, Travis Scott, and Kanye West.

What do you do for fun?

Play video games, workout, watch anime, shop fashion and shoes, watch documentaries, party, get drunk, read … all kinds of shit.

What's the craziest thing that a fan's ever done for you?

Offer us blow jobs so they could meet Juicy J.
