His latest is a total '80s throwback.

As of late, Nick Jonas has done tasteful pop-soul. He dabbles in R&B in his 2014 self-titled album, though just barely, as if he didn't want to drive away Top 40 fans. (He is, after all, a Jonas Brother.) So what makes his new single "Levels" way more exciting is how Jonas doesn't concern himself with any of that. He's diving headfirst into this '80s synth-funk throwback, as his falsetto coasts over a few signifiers: a wobbling bass line, glittering keyboards and, best of all, that sense that you need to hit the dance floor now. Big Boi of OutKast would jam to this.

"Levels" gets its live debut on August 21 at the MTV Video Music Awards pre-show, while the video arrives a week later. Until then, listen to the studio version below.
