Why is a top hip-hop artist as a Glastonbury headliner such a controversial issue?

Glastonbury organizer Emily Eavis has revealed to the Irish Times that she's actually received several death threats after announcing Kanye West as a headliner for this year's festival.

“It was not a pleasant world we unwrapped,” Eavis said. “I had death threats and stuff. It was just horrible. It was just crazy. It was getting out of control. We had Time magazine, all the American news channels saying they were going to come down. This incredible onslaught worldwide."

Eavis is the daughter of Glastonbury founder Michael Eavis. Together, the father-daughter team book the line-up every year for the popular English festival. The festival traditionally boasts a rock-heavy line-up—and with all these death threats and petitions over the removal of Kanye from the bill, it also stirs up some uncomfortable questions about racism

“It was quite upsetting because we were talking about something that was so exciting and interesting and fresh and brilliant for the festival," Eavis added.
