Jayceeoh on how he got into deejaying, what’s coming up this year and why he likes golf so much.
Jayceeoh has been a well-known name in the club circuit for years (and was even crowned champion of VH1′s “Master of the Mix” TV show in 2013). Lately, he’s been on a touring spree in support of his recent EP, No Clearance, from holding residencies in Las Vegas and EDC Mexico. Famous for bringing together EDM and hip-hop artists in his sets and his Super 7 mixtape series, he just released the single “Jit Goin' Ham” on Buygore. He talks to Myspace about how he got started in EDM, what he does when he’s not producing music, and his future collaborations.
Hometown: I was born in Los Angeles then moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in eighth grade. I consider both cities my home towns.
Current residence: Los Angeles.I moved back after living in Boston and NYC for a long period of time. I love LA so much these days. After traveling across the world to DJ, coming home to SoCal is the best.
Where did you get the name Jayceeoh?
Jayceeoh is actually an acronym for the initials in my name, Jacob Charles Osher. I spelled it out Jay-cee-oh just to spice it up a bit.
How did you get started in the EDM scene?
I have been DJing since I was in eighth grade. So pretty much since then I have been into using music to make people move. It was around 2007 when I really started getting into electronic dance music and I have gravitated in that direction ever since. The energy in dance music in undeniable. I played piano a bit as a kid but the turntable is the instrument that I have mastered most.
Was that when you realized you wanted to make music for a living?
Well, when I started making music I had no idea how far I would be able to take it... I was a little kid and loved scratching and using the turntable as an instrument. I had big aspirations, but it was a hobby. It wasn't until my sophomore year of college when transferring schools that I knew I wanted to make this my path for life.
What's your favorite city in the world to play in?
Las Vegas. I have been lucky enough to play some of the best venues in Las Vegas.
The Light and Drai's are amazing clubs. The crowds in Las Vegas are always turnt up, too. When people come to Vegas they come to party hard. That is very conducive to an energetic crowd. As people are starting to broaden their horizons musically, I find that I can play more cool new music and that I don't have to stick to the old Vegas formula of just the hits.
Who would you love to collaborate with?
So many incredible artists that I would love to collaborate with. Skrillex and Flosstradamus are on the top of that list. I have had the honor to collaborate with some other legendary artists. SBCR (The Bloody Beetroots) and myself have a couple of songs that we have coming out this year. I've also been working on some ideas with Bassnectar.
Whose songs do you love to remix?
I love searching for songs with a very strong melodic vocal to build off of. Actually working on a remix for Alison Wonderland right now that is gonna be a big one.
Which artists inspire you most?
I am inspired mostly by all of my producer friends and peers. Guys like Bassnectar, SBCR(The Bloody Beetroots), A-trak, Meaux Green, Jauz, Jack U (Skrillex & Diplo), GTA, B-sides , TJR, Tommy Trash, Boombox Cartel, Grandtheft, Party Favor, Porter Robinson, KeysNKrates, NGHTMRE... I love seeing how my homies are having such a huge impact and pushing music forward.
Why is your EP called No Clearance?
The No Clearance EP was birthed from me having a bunch of really dope songs that I did that contained vocal samples. Instead of going through that hassle of trying to clear all the vocals, I decided to release all of the songs for free download, hence, NO CLEARANCE.
Do you have any preperformance rituals?
Pre-show I like to have a good early dinner... preferably four hours before show time. Then I like to have a couple of hours to myself to relax and go through music get a game plan for my set. Then I like to go to the venue and arrive around 30 minutes prior to my set to check out the room, feel the vibe of the crowd and listen to what the DJ before is playing.
What do you do when you're not producing?
When I am not touring or in the studio, I am all about outdoor and physical activities. Basketball, hiking, snowboarding swimming, hitting the beach, camping. Golf is also my new No. 1 hobby. Its insane how much golfing I have done since I started playing less than a year ago. It's one of the only places that I can really tune out everything else in my life. I also am pretty nice in the kitchen. My older brother Ben Osher is an executive head chef at Nobu so I have picked up a few things over the years.
