R&B duo talk about how they met, their love for MJ and the hows and whys of their sizzling hot video.

When John Thomas and Chris Liggio—collectively known as Lipstick Gypsy—debuted their video for the sticky-hot track “Infatuation,” we couldn’t get enough of it. Signed by L.A. Reid and producer Salaam Remi, Thomas’ voice and Liggio’s production meld together soul, funk and gospel into groove-laden earworms. Already, they’ve caught the ear of Elvis Duran, who dubbed them Artist of the Month of October on the Today Show. Now the pair gives Myspace a look at what was really happening when they were making the video for “Infatuation.” Check out the exclusive behind the scenes footage above and read below as Thomas and Liggio also talk about their childhood, their love for Michael Jackson and why Lipstick Gypsy nail art might just be the way to their hearts.

Hometown:

John: I was born and raised on Martha's Vineyard, a small island in Massachusetts. I lived there until I was 17.

Chris: A quaint little town called Mamaroneck in Westchester County, New York.

Homebase:

John: I live in southern Connecticut, right outside of New York.

Chris: Another quaint little town in Westchester County, New York.

What made you two want to form a band together?

Chris: John and I met through a guy by the name of Jojo Brim, a music manager in the industry. He played me John’s music to see if I would be interested in producing him.

John: Yeah, we started working on some stuff and our chemistry was so dope. I’d never met someone who loved music the same way I do. After a few months of working together, playing some shows, we decided becoming a band was a great idea.

I read that you both had musical childhoods, but going to church gave you your musical start?

John: I don’t come from a musical household but I have cousins that are very musically talented. I started singing when I was 7 years old. Gospel is where it began, and I just fell in love with the feeling. I then began listening to Motown and it progressed from there.

Chris: I did come from a musical household, my dad is a full-time musician. I was around it all my life, from going on the road with him as a kid to watching him write songs in his home studio or rehearsing with his band mates. It pretty much surrounded me. I don’t think I ever really “discovered” music per say, it's just always been a part of me.

I hear a lot of Michael Jackson in your sound. Who are your biggest musical influences?

Chris: Sure, Michael is a big influence on both of us. For me it has a lot to do with the songwriting & production work of Quincy Jones & Rod Temperton. The vocal arrangements & those grooves always made me want to make my own version of that stuff. Some of our biggest musical influences other than MJ are Stevie Wonder, Rick James, Steely Dan & Prince.

John: Thank you! If anything we do reminds you of Michael, then we’re doing something right. He’s had a huge impact on us.

How do you describe your music to someone who's never heard you before?

It’s like a blend of funk & soul with heavy pop sensibilities.

Why are you called Lipstick Gypsy?

Lipstick Gypsy is a term we describe as “Someone who travels from one love to the next, searching for fulfillment.”

Who would you love to collaborate with?

Tori Kelly, Kendrick Lamar

You've been on the Today show and have had a few big appearances in media. What's your favorite so far and what's your dream gig?

John: Yeah! We’ve been super blessed to have those opportunities and it’s only the beginning. Being on the Today Show with Kathy lee and Hoda as Elvis Duran’s artist of the month has got to be our favorite so far. It was amazing.

Chris: Yeah, the Today Show was awesome, a lot of fun! I think our dream gig would be to perform at the Grammy’s.

What's the best thing that your fans have done for you recently?

Chris: We’ve been getting a lot of fan nail art lately, that’s pretty cool. Waiting for those LG tattoos though, that’s when you know you really kick ass. (Laughs.)

John: The nail art is impressive. Some of the choreography our fans post is so inspiring too! Some chick was hula hooping to “Infatuation” I’ve never seen that before. (Laughs.) Tour hasn't started yet so we’ll keep you updated on the craziness thats to come!

What is your album called?

Our debut EP is self-titled, Lipstick Gypsy the EP. Being our first project, it means a lot to us but its also just a taste of whats to come.

What's on your Christmas list this year?

A number one song!

What do you want Santa to get you?

John: Harley Davidson Dyna Lowrider. Please and Thank you.

Chris: The 25th Anniversary of A Tribe Called Quest Peoples Instinctive Travels 45’s box set. I’m a geek for that kinda stuff.
