The avant-pop artist recalls highs and lows from his busy year.

After kicking off the year with a performance of “10,000 Emerald Pools” on Conan, the 23-year-old musician born Garrett Borns stayed on the road for the next 11 months to support the release of his debut album, Dopamine

“It’s been a marathon of shows and traveling,” Borns told Myspace recently. “I feel like I’ve been on the road for three years. Things are just racing by. I’ve had to read old interviews of mine from the past year so I have something to reference!”

He also insists that he isn’t complaining one bit. Borns knows how good he’s got it, from celebrating the release of his album by making an appearance on The Tonight Show, to his cross-country tour opening for Charli XCX and Bleachers to dates at Lollapalooza and Pitchfork Festival Paris. The hard work is paying off, too, as Dopamine’s sexed up mix of electronic pop and falsetto-led glam rock garnered praise from Taylor Swift, NPR, and music blogs the world over.

In a brief moment of downtime, Borns took a look back at his highlights and lowlights of 2015, and looked ahead to what may come next year.

Best Moment of 2015: I’d say releasing my album on October 16 and playing The Tonight Show that same night. That was a big thing for me and a crazy celebration.

Best Show Played In 2015: Amsterdam was definitely a standout. That was the first time we played there. A beautiful city and everyone there was really stoked to see us.

Worst Show Played In 2015: There was a tour where we went to SXSW and back and I completely lost my voice. That never happened to me before. We played a ton of shows at South By and that just did me in.

Best Moment You Had On Tour With Charli XCX and Bleachers: One of my favorite shows on that tour was when we played in Detroit. A hometown show for me, so a lot of friends came out for that one.

Best Piece Of Clothing You Bought In 2015: I got this sunflower jacket, this kind of ‘70s inspired thing made of velvet material from Topshop in the UK. It came with pants that are the same material and a button up shirt that’s the same pattern. It’s a pretty intense combination. I only wore them all at the same time once at the Brixton Academy. Otherwise I mix and match them.

Best Instagram Photo of 2015: There’s this one photo that has nothing to do with me. One of my friends bought this rubber alien and he threw it in the air and captured a shot of it in midair. I thought it was really hilarious so I stole it and put on my Instagram. There’s a lyric that I stole from my song “Clouds”—”I forget about time and space”—that comically fit the photograph. It’s supposed to be a love song and here’s this picture of weird looking alien.

Best Snapchat of 2015: I took over Lollapalooza’s Snapchat for a “Day In The Life On The Road” kind of thing. So it was just showing them a shitty hotel room and shitty tour van. And I was doing weird things on the road like climbing out of one those iceboxes you see at gas stations.

Best Fan Encounter At Your Post-Show Meet & Greets: Some things I put on Snapchat, people will read into those and I’ll get presents. This one time, I did this stop motion thing of me unwrapping some Andes mints. At the next show, I was getting bags of those. My fans’ attention to detail is really sweet.

Most Awkward Fan Encounter: I had just played Lollapalooza, and everybody in the band got in the van and left. So I was walking to get an Uber, and this mass exodus of people came out. This girl and her friends, decked out in festival ware were, like, “Oh my God are you BØRNS?!” and started running after me. The leader of the pack got in front of me and said, “Oh no, it’s not BØRNS” and ran away.

Best Band You Heard That People Should Know About: This guy La Priest played the opening night at Pitchfork Festival Paris. Really amazing tunes, and it’s just one guy with all these analog controls that he uses while he plays guitar and sings. He put out an amazing album and he replicates it beautifully onstage.

Best Thing You Watched On Netflix: I really got into Cosmos and these documentaries about outer space and the multiverse. I also watched all of Arrested Development. Pretty late to that train on that one but I’m really happy I did it.

Best Film You Watched: The Amy Winehouse documentary. I watched that on an airplane. It’s really heavy but it’s pretty amazing too.

Best Meal You Ate: We went to Paris and immediately were doing press all day and had to play a show at the end of the night. I was pretty much a zombie. But we have such great support in Paris and the guys from Universal Music took us for this amazing meal at this hidden spot. It was at some sort of foreign racecar dealership. You walk in and see all these beautiful vintage racecars in glass cases and at the top of this staircase was this little private restaurant. It was the most insane food and because it was so hard-earned, that made it even more delectable.

Worst Meal You Ate: There was one day I pretty much survived on boiled peanuts and gummy bears, which isn’t that bad, but if we’re talking meals, that one was one of the least balanced meals ever.

Favorite Part Of The World That You Visited: Either Glasgow or the Netherlands. It was my first time to Amsterdam and I really liked the culture there—the architecture and the food and seeing bikes everywhere. As for Glasgow, we were there on Halloween and just met a lot of lovely individuals.

Place You’d Like To Tour In 2016: Brazil or Argentina. I’d love to get down there. I always get the “Come to Brazil” comments on Instagram.

Album You’re Most Looking Forward To Next Year: The new Miike Snow, which is coming out soon. I’m really stoked for that. I’m a huge fan. They put out a couple of singles that sound really amazing. So different from the stuff you’re used to but they still have that thing that makes their music so great.

Plans For 2016: I guess continue to travel more. We have a bunch of European dates with Halsey that are going to be really fun. Making more music videos. I have a lot of ideas for those. Also having some time to chill in LA and get down some new ideas for the next album. I have so many new song ideas already.

New Year’s Resolution: Send more postcards probably. Write better songs. Take more film photographs. And just make sure to document the road and travels.
