The LA-based duo add a nice sheen to the toughest parts of relationships in their '80s-inspired tunes.
The music of Pr0files sounds like a memory, and not because of the band's updated '80s vibe. Often even when you look back after inevitable heartbreak, the overarching feeling is that of beauty. That curve is what Pr0files manage to distill in their songs. Lyrically their songs tackle the heartache, longing and misunderstandings of relationships, but with a sheen that filters them in a different light. Frontwoman Lauren Pardini's airy vocals glide oh so perfectly over synth-laden electronics for a catchy combination. Based in Los Angeles, Pr0files operates as a twosome, completed by musician Danny Sternbaum. Independently, the pair has collaborated with everyone from Skrillex to A$AP Rocky before establishing themselves as a duo in their own right. After a smattering of singles and the release of a EP, Pr0files are gearing up for the release of their debut album in early 2016.
Homebase: Los Angeles, CA
How did you two meet and become friends in the first place?
Danny: We can't actually pinpoint exactly when we met, but it was years ago when a mutual friend of ours moved out to LA and introduced us. He was in a band that had been recording their album at a recording studio in NYC where Lauren also worked. Lauren and I pretty much hit it off right off the bat talking about how we were both obsessed with Nine Inch Nails.
Was your musical collaboration instant? How did it unfold?
Danny: Our first time working together was while I was working at a recording studio out here in LA. They had an awesome piano at this studio and Lauren would come in after hours when the studio was free and I would practice recording her singing and playing piano. A couple of years later, I started an electronic project called The Boy Traveler, and Lauren was the first person that came to mind when I was thinking of collaborators for that. Another person who I had on that project was Sonny Moore (aka Skrillex). It wasn't until several years later that we decided to start Pr0files, after having recorded a couple demos together for fun.
You've both been involved in a multitude of musical projects prior to Pr0files. What about this duo is different from your past catalog and experiences?
Lauren: No one ever tells you that being in a band is really hard. It's like sports, sometimes you win and sometimes you lose. This is the first band I’ve been in, where setbacks don't phase us. We usually go get a drink and a slice of pizza, talk about how much the setback sucks and then go back to work.
Danny: For one, I think both of our past experiences help make Pr0files work. Although we usually agree on most things creatively, we both have really strong opinions and a lot of ideas! Without having had the experience of being involved in all these other bands and projects, I don't think we would know how to truly work together and get our best ideas heard. We're also pretty self-reliant in this band, more so than anything else I've been involved in.
Love, relationships, sex and heartbreak serve as the basis of your songs. Have any relationship advice you've picked up since penning these songs or that you came to realize through your writing?
Lauren: The only advice I have is don’t stay in a bad relationship because of fear of the unknown. The unknown is a wonderful place to be in life. It’s filled with opportunity.
How important is the Internet and various music platforms to your existence as a band?
Danny: I can't even imagine doing this without the insane amount of access we have available to fans because of the internet. It's really the best thing to happen to artists, especially independent artists.
What vocalists and artists do you count as influences? What else influences what you create?
Danny: Daft Punk, Air, The Knife, Prince, NIN, LCD Soundsystem, Hall & Oates, New Order, Madonna, Hercules And Love Affair, Blondie, Depeche Mode, Metronomy. The room that we're writing and recording in, and how loud we can turn it up, can definitely have a big influence in the overall energy of the music.
Lauren: I love the house music vocalists of the 90's. All those disco singers like Donna Summer. And I love crooners like Sinatra & Bono. Another huge influence is the guys we share our studio with. They are all hip-hop producers, and when the beat in the room next door is bigger than yours you know you've got some work to do!
How do you describe LA from the perspective of not only being residents, but creatives?
Danny: LA is definitely home to me. It's unreal how many other creative people there are that live in this city. It's inescapable, which is usually a great source of motivation as well as inspiration to constantly get better and better at your craft. I can totally understand that flip side of it though. If I'm in town, it's hard for me to not want to work on music all the time.
Lauren: Creatively this city is a dream. I live by the ocean and can go to the mountains in 30 minutes. It doesn't get more inspiring than that in life and music. Cliche, cliche, cliche!
What's your favorite bit of '80s nostalgia currently alive in 2015?
Lauren: I'm stoked on the Bladerunner remake. And Star Wars. Maybe I'm just stoked on Harrison Ford? In the grand scheme of things, he pretty much rocked the '80s.
Danny: I hear that Goonies 2 is in the works.
What would you like to accomplish as Pr0files?
Lauren: To be crazy prolific and put out the many, many songs we've got waiting to be heard.
Danny: I would really love to get to the point where we can have Pr0files action figures made and people will buy them. We have lots of ideas, can't give them all away here
