The debut 'Moonlight' single ... reminds us of a few other songs.

Ariana Grande's "Focus" is a classic haters-gonna-hate anthem. "I know what I came to do / and that ain't gonna change / So go ahead and talk your talk / 'cause I won't take the bait," she sings.

That is fine—healthy, even. But the problem with "Focus," as with many other pop songs, is that it is a mish-mash of songs we've heard before but doesn't quite transcend pastiche. The production borrows its rhythms and brass from KC and the Sunshine Band's disco-funk hit "That's the Way (I Like It)," as Idolator points out. The man barking "Focus on me" at the hook sounds an awful lot like Mystikal, who himself is James Brown reincarnated into a New Orleans rapper. And the way the song is structured—R&B throwback at the verses, hip-hop throwback at the hook—is just like Ariana's My Everything lead single "Problem."

Unfortunately, pointing all this out seems for naught; after all, as we talk our talk, Ariana wouldn't dare listen. Watch the video below.
