She returns after three years away from the spotlight.

Adele is a woman out of her time, mostly. Like "Someone Like You," "Hello"—her first single in three years—begins at the piano, this handy reminder that she is impervious to music industry trends. She also sings about heartbreak, which is her specialty. (Never mind that her next album 25 is "a make-up record," not a break-up record.) This time she compares a dissolving relationship to a lost connection over the phone, and with her voice soaring at the hook—what she called "trying to have a Meatloaf moment."

The sepia-toned video tells a similar story. Adele heads back to the house she once shared with a former beau. When she makes a call, she does so using a flip phone and through a landline, which seems inconceivable in the age of iPhone 6. Once in a while, though, Adele gives away that, yes, this takes place in 2015. Her "Hello" video is filmed with IMAX cameras, which, great. And then there is her love interest: The Wire's charming Tristan Wilds, which puts Adele in a (broken, but still) interracial relationship.
