Starting as a four-piece garage rock outfit in 1993, the Finnish group Larry and the Lefthanded quickly faced a cult following in their home country.
Timo Kaukolampi (vocals, bass), Mikko "Vilunki 3000" Viljakainen (keyboards), Mikko "Larry Guitar" Oksa (guitar), and Hannu Anttilainen (drums) delivered a raw, energetic sound, and their sometimes bizarre live sets brought them a reputation as a must-see act whenever they invaded concert venues in Finland, and eventually in the rest of northern Europe. After a series of limited-edition vinyl singles and one album named Diabolica, the group released their legendary second album, Quantum Rider (Jupiter/Texicalli), in 1998. It didn't sell loads, but it is still considered a masterpiece within the garage rock genre, and the group won new fans all over the world. In 1999, Oksa quit the band, but Kaukolampi, Viljakainen, and Anttilainen continued as an instrument-swapping trio, simply renaming themselves And the Lefthanded. In addition to And the Lefthanded, Kaukolampi and Viljakainen are also members of the somewhat dark electro trio Op:l Bastards, a group that achieved a certain underground success in Europe. And the Lefthanded released a self-titled EP (Éllet Records) in 2002, as well as a second album, named In the Kingdom of Shadows (Éllet Records/Jupiter), in 2004. Today, Kaukolampi is busy working as a producer for other artists such as Annie, and although the trio still officially exists, they only play gigs very sporadically. ~ Ketil Mosnes
