Compassionate Consumers is a not-for-profit animal advocacy organization based in Rochester, NY. CC focuses on the cruelty of animals in agriculture and encourages consumers to adopt a vegetarian diet or seek out more humane animal products. Also considered a consumer advocacy group, CC believes that everyone has the right to know and obligation to find out where their food comes from. CC helps to ensure that consumers have access to truthful and reliable information regarding how their food is produced so that they are able to make informed and compassionate choices.
Compassionate Consumers was founded in 2004 by a small group of people concerned about animal welfare in the food industry. Many people have little or no connection to where any of their food comes from. Farm animals are often hidden from view in large warehouse-like facilities; and the origin of any specific animal product can be difficult to trace. Out of sight, out of mind - and its time for that to change. This is the spark that began the organization and its drive to bring information to the public about these issues.
Wegmans Cruelty is a half hour documentary produced by a small investigative team from the organization Compassionate Consumers. Organization members contacted Wegmans Food Markets to try to hold some meaningful dialogue about the conditions at Wegmans Egg Farm, and were then misled and dismissed by Wegmans representatives. The team set out to capture actual footage inside the farm and create a film based on their experience. Compassionate Consumers is distributing the film through the Internet for free, and on DVD for $7.
The film features statements from Wegmans representatives, interviews with the investigators, and footage of what life and death is like inside of a battery cage facility. Approximately 98% of all eggs produced in the United States come from hens that are housed in battery cages. Often unknowingly, customers are supporting the practices of modern egg farming by purchasing eggs.
Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is a 69-store supermarket chain with stores in New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia. The family-owned company, founded in 1916, is recognized as an industry leader and innovator. Wegmans has been named one of the 'Top 100 Companies to Work For' by Fortune Magazine for the last several years. In 2005, Wegmans ranked number one on the list.
Compassionate Conusmers is a Rochester based animal advocacy group. Formed in 2004, the group aims to inspire consumers to educate themselves about the impact of their food choices. Compassionate Consumers is calling for a boycott of battery cage eggs.

If everyone in the U.S. stopped eating meat we could use the grain to feed everyone in Africa and the United States and still have enough to feed 100,000,000 people. It would give us a lot of extra resources to make ethanol which would make us not depend on foreign oil and eventually would lead to peace for humans and animals. Together we can change the world! The time is now and if we dont do something, it will be too late. Do it for your children and grandchildren and the future generations, so they dont look back at us and ask us why we didnt do anything when we had the chance to make a change
I've been following your story ever since I moved to Syracuse (near Wegmans' headquarters), so my upstate NY life has coincided with my Wegmans Cruelty awareness life. Fortunately, as a vegan, I've never bought eggs from Wegmans. Keep fighting the good fight!
Hi, thanks for adding me! I love the fact that you are fighting for anmals' rights, and I love that you are spreading the word about how animals get horribly mistreated just so that they can become food. I have always been an immense animal lover, and just recently I became vegeterian about a week or so ago, and it is all thanks to Peta.com-"Meet Your Meat". This was a video that exposed me to the cruelty that innocent beings endure, and all the torture that they are inflicted upon. The majority of humanity is evil and has no sense of compassion towards animals. However, it makes me very happy to se that there are people like you, that fight for animals' rights everyday, and expose people to the truth. ANIMALS ARE NOT FOOD! Thanks a lot for all the help that you provide to animals, it makes a big difference in their lives! Thanks for being my friend!
love, jennifer
