Seph's Interests
|
| General | This is bound to be a long list. Like Heinlein, I value and cultivate versatility, so my metaphorical fingers are in a lot of sinister, metaphorical pies. My passions change regularly; I never really stop being interested in something so much as I find something else to be more interested in. I like to think of myself as a sort of Renaissance Thug, a man who embraces things most people eschew and puts together more common things into new and interesting memetic chimeras. My most recent passions have focused on evolutionary biology and warfare, and I spend a lot of my free time immersed in those subjects. I also study/have studied (to varying degrees of success): physics, combat, astronomy, theology, psychology, philosophy, sociology, zoology, archaeology, paleontology, crime and law, art, game theory, music, literature (esp. late American), history (esp. pre-Christian and American), skepticism and doubt, linguistics, and assorted others. I travel frequently, enjoy martial arts and weight training, hiking, writing, gaming, and plotting your death. I am an arrogant prick and probably think I'm better than you. | | Music | Bad Religion, Black Flag, Warren Zevon, Beethoven, NOFX, Reel Big Fish, the Aquabats, Tom Waits, bis, Johnny Cash, Flogging Molly, Rollins Band, Elvis Costello, E-Type, the Big Bopper, Mindless Self-Indulgence, Dropkick Murphys, Nirvana, GWAR, Queen, Harry Gregson-Williams, MegaDeth, Public Enemy, Aesop Rock, Strapping Young Lad, etc. I mostly go in for old school punk rock, classical, opera, metal and older rock. | | Movies | Fight Club, In the Mouth of Madness, Grosse Point Blank, LA Confidential, the Usual Suspects, Equilibrium, Reservoir Dogs, Battle Royale, Dark City, Kill Bill, Unbreakable, Seven Samurai, Idiocracy, the Big Lebowski, the Messenger, Titus, This is Spinal Tap, the Silence of the Lambs, Batman, Unleashed, scores of others. I dig dystopian futures, most dangerous game variants and movies that fuck with your head well. | | Television | I truthfully don't watch television actively. It's frequently on as background, where available, but I generally only pay attention to a handful of shows. I watch a lot of 'Law & Order' and catch 'Penn & Teller; Bullshit!', 'Mythbusters', and 'Battlefield Detectives' whenever I can. I don't have cable, so I tend to watch the Office, Arrested Development, and Futurama ad infinitum. I actively watch the History and Military channels whenever I'm looking for something to relax with. I also watch an inordinately high number of cartoons for such a dashing, masculine, mature fellow. I attribute that to the fact that my development was arrested at age thirteen and effectively thrown into a Vietnamese POW camp. It's been surviving on bamboo and watersnakes for over a decade. | | Books | Anything by Ernest Hemingway, James Joyce, Herman Melville, Jack London, Mark Twain, Vladimir Nabokov, Yukio Mishima, George Orwell, JD Salinger, Hunter S. Thompson, and the poetry of Edna St. Vincent Millay and Charles Bukowski. Various non-fiction books like survival manuals and books on theology, science esp. biology and evolutionary science, philosophy, psychology, etc., especially Richard Dawkins' 'The Selfish Gene' and 'The Blind Watchmaker', Michael Shermer's 'The Science of Good and Evil' and 'How We Believe' , Rene Descartes, Nietzsche, Darwin and basically anything that uses science and logic to trash on people's sacred beliefs. | | Heroes | King Leonidas I of Sparta; Charles Darwin; Anaxagoras; Ernest Hemingway; Jack London; Yukio Mishima; Hunter S. Thompson; Friedrich Nietzsche; Manfred vonRichtofen; Abraham Lincoln; Pedro Francisco; Miyamoto Musashi; Roland; Richard Dawkins; Ernest Hemingway; Penn Jillette; Henry Rollins; Ian MacKaye; Greg Graffin; Sir William Marshall; Teddy and Franklin Roosevelt; Benjamin Franklin; Albert Einstein; Stephen Hawking; Aleister Crowley; Norman Borlaug; Richard Heinlein; Douglas Adams; Clarence Darrow; David Hume; Carl Sagan; Epicurus; James Randi; Isaac Asimov; Alfred Kinsey; Oda Nobunaga; Julius Caesar; Saladin; El Cid Campeador |

About me:
Let us be candorous.
I live with the constant dichotomy of hating virtually everyone and having some fucked-up hero complex. All my virtues are rooted in vice; I'm tenacious as a side effect of being a stubborn ass, assertive and self-effacing as a side effect of being a violent thug and charming as a side effect of being a narcissistic sociopath. All fine qualities for your potential husband, ladies. Alpha dog, but only three meals away from tearing your throat out.
But really, I'm not all that bad. I'm not hopeless or angsty or angry about niggling personal sleights from my distant past. I'm plenty angry, don't get me wrong; anger seems to have become my default emotion, of late. But I'm also actually damn hopeful, striving, reaching, fighting, struggling constantly, making myself better, trying to make the people and the world around me better, but no, I'm not a fucking hippie pinko about it, either. Quixotism, being an iconoclast, and iron-nail realism are not qualities that mix well together, but they've made an equal home in me. I feel like I was born in a fairy tale, raised in the stories of Hemingway and London, and educated in the works of Nietzsche and Dawkins. A friend once asribed to me Raoul Duke's literary epitaph of Dr. Gonzo at the end of Fear and Loathing...; "One of god's own creatures. A high-powered mutant never considered for mass production. To weird to live...and too rare to die." I guess that means less now that every hipster fuck on the planet has read that fucking book. One of my ex-girlfriends probably gave me the best compliment of my life when she told me that I was "like some awesome combination of all three of the main characters from LA Confidential."
One thing I'm not is cool; I suck at being cool. If you think I'm being cool, trust me, this is only the illusion of cool. I have all the trappings of cool, but none of the attitude. I don't like cool things or cool people and I'm suspicious of anything popular, because even good things get ruined for me when everybody else loves them.
I know more than you do, and I'm not afraid to let you know that. Don't feel bad. While you were out partying, having fun, being happy, getting laid, and all that other shit people do in high school and college, I was at home or at some brainless job being pretty fucking miserable, reading. All things considered, I'd say you got the better end of the deal.
Do not debate me. I will fucking cut you.
Anyway. I'm not pleading for attention and I'm not trying to sell myself to you, so there isn't much else to say. And I'm probably not a tenth as smug or pretentious as I may sound here, but consider this fortress of verbosity to be a Great Wall, of sorts, against the barbarians; if you've read this far with something resembling comprehension, congratulations! You're just the sort of person I might like to talk to! If you think I sound interesting (or challenging, as has frequently been the case from would-be "friends"), then feel free to try me out. I am a poison few can stomach, but I promise that if you do not hate me, you will no doubt love me.

Who I'd like to meet:
Henry Rollins, Penn Jillette, and Richard Dawkins top out the list, being living heroes of mine. I'd add Greg Graffin, Timothy Kreider, Ian McKaye, Patty Hearst, Chiaki Kuriyama, Elvis Costello, Dave Sim, JD Salinger, Michael Shermer, Alan Moore, and a handful of others. Some because I admire them, some just because I delight in encountering human oddities. Most of the people I'd like to meet are long dead, which stands to reason, what with most of the people who were ever alive being dead now. There are probably a lot of people who were never alive that I'd really like to meet, but fortunately I'm not burdened with the knowledge of such unborn spectres and am accordingly not troubled by them.
