' After 22 years as a dance club and band venue. The Upstage in Oakland said a dark farewell last week, sending its goth and new wave nights off to other clubs.
DJ E-Z Lou [Ortego] signed off with a final '80s Night last Thursday, spinning to a crowd of older fans and newcomers that topped 500. Ortego got his start at the Upstage in 1986 under the wing of the house DJ. the late and legendary Harry the Wire. Ortego left for a while to work at Metropol and Houlihan's, but brought his new wave back to the Upstage in 1995.
He takes his Thursday '80s Nights to Prive (formerly Rosebud) in the Strip, beginning tonight. Ortego also fills the South Side with '80s music, spinning at Club Cafe on Tuesdays, Z Lounge on Wednesdays and the Smiling Moose on Sundays.
"It's more on the punk side, for the people who hang out there," he says of the Moose.
Does he ever get tired of '80s music?
"No," he says firmly "I think it's one of the best genres of music that ever came out." He lists his favorite bands as New Order, Depeche Mode and the Pet Shop Boys.
Beginning Jan. 10, the Ceremony goth night will move to Pegasus, 818 Liberty Ave., Downtown.
Meanwhile, it's the end of an era on the second floor of 3609 Forbes Ave., which will be converted to office space.

A brief history of the Upstage: (by DJ ez-Lou as much as I can remember)/
Early 80’s – Was known as Upstairs at Mr. C’s. Bands and DJ’s./
1984 – DJ Harry “the Wire” moved his Monday night Modern Dance (also his program on WYEP) from The Sanctuary (now gone, was behind the Kings Court/Beehive) to the Upstage./
1986 – DJ ez-Lou Joined the team. Other DJ’s were there as well (I don’t remember who)./
1989 – DJ ez-Lou left to work at Metropol./
1991-92 – Harry left and after several DJ’s, Spike took control./
1993-94 – Harry returns and creates a Industrial/Goth night on Friday’s. Spike creates Thursday Retro Nights. Monday night were packed with a line to get in. MONDAY NIGHT!!!/
1994 – Harry retires and DJ ez-Lou took over Friday Industrial/Goth night, and added Dark techno and New Beat. Thursdays become Big./
1995 – Spike leaves and DJ ez-Lou becomes the resident DJ. Monday nights are losing strength. All good nights eventually come to and end!/
1996 (I think) – Ceremony is created at the Laga and Upstage Fridays start to fail. All good nights eventually come to and end and new ones start up./
1999 – Upstage closes. Thursdays are moved to The Beehive./
2001 – Thursday Retro night moves to the Laga after The Beehive closes./
6 months or so later Thursdays return to the Upstage (new owner)./
End of 2006 - All good nights eventually come to and end!/
