Richard Crawford's Interests
|
| General | Ah, let's see. Writing. Reading. Linux. Grilling. Open source software. Role-playing games. Random goofy shit. Guess that'd make me a nerd. | | Music | Depends on my mood. I have pretty eclectic tastes in music. Lately I've been listening to a lot of Latin music and reggae. I also enjoy classical, Celtic, choral, classic rock, punk (especially hardcore Irish-American punk bands like Dropkick Murphys and Flogging Molly). Right now Louis Armstrong is playing "When the Saints Come Marching In" on my computer. Oh, and lots of Tom Waits. | | Movies | I prefer films that focus on a good story, rather than splashy special effects. I can forgive crappy FX if the story and the characterization are good; unfortunately, too many movies these days try to make up for sloppy storylines with splash effects, and it just doesn't work. Favorite films include Kenneth Branagh's "Hamlet", Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, most anything by Akira Kurosawa or Kevin Smith, the X-Men films, and Spiderman 1 & 2. I'm looking forward to "Superman Returns" with some cautious optimism... | | Television | Battlestar Galactica. Doctor Who. Lost. Heroes. Yep. Nerd. | | Books | Where to start? My wife and I have nearly 2,000. I used to have a lot more, but I had to sell them years ago to pay rent. It was like giving away my children for medical experimentation. I read a lot, in a lot of different areas. I prefer well written science fiction and fantasy, though I'm extremely picky (I tried to read George R. R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire", I really did, but it didn't work for me). I like reading novels and stories from other cultures; I wish I knew at least one other language so that I could read those books in the original tongue. My favorite authors are Stephen King, Terry Pratchett, Peter F. Hamilton, J. R. R. Tolkien, Isabel Allende, Pablo Neruda, Ursula K. LeGuin, and lots of others. | | Heroes | Generally, I admire people who stick by their principles to make society better overall, even if their beliefs differ from mine. I also admire people who have a broad range of intellectual interests. Einstein, Jefferson, Feynman, Eva Peron, Bill Bryson. Also my grandpa. And at the risk of sounding like a sissy, my mom. And, of course, the genius storytellers of our day and days past: Neil Gaiman, Jim Henson, and so on. And also George Plimpton, Mae C. Jemison, Jane Goodall, and plenty more. There's just too many. |

About me:
If you really want to find out about me, go to my home page: mossroot.com. And my LJ is here. There's just way too much advertising and spam on MySpace for me to hang out here that much. Everything I post here is cross-posted to my LJ and my home page anyway.
Here, have fun with this: The Random Sci Fi Channel Movie Generator
Hey! Pseudopod, the weekly horror podcast magazine, is now featuring my short story "Indications". So download it, listen to it, and love it, dammit!
I'm the editor in chief of:
Our third issue is now online!
Other than that, I'm ecstatically married, too infrequently published writer, Linux systems administrator, web developer, choir member, all around geek. For more info, go here.

Who I'd like to meet:
Old friends with whom I've lost touch, fellow writers, people from my high school who graduated near when I did (I was class of '86).
Oh, actual people I want to meet? Uh... Linus Torvalds. Neil Gaiman. Terry Pratchett. Amy Tan. Some online writer friends of mine who live back east. Isabel Allende. And Salma Hayek, because... Because she seems like a nice lady. Yeah.
