THE VLA Bio
In the summer of 2004, after a few years playing the music scene in NYC, Jason Rabe (guitar/vox) and Ravi Subramanian (bass/keys), decided to move out to Los Angeles and see what a little sunshine could do for them. Arriving with only a hockey bag full of
clothes and their gear, the two musicians began sleeping on the couches and futons of their more then generous friends. Within a month they managed to wrangle a few jobs, find a drummer and begin rehearsing their new material. They named the band the VLA, after the research facility in New Mexico, and started gigging…
After a few shows the band hooked up with producer Jason Lader (Rilo Kiley, Nightmare of You, Vietnam, Rick Rubin) and went into the studio to record their first single “Happiness Everyday.” A mix of defiant pop and scalding lyrical vitriol, the track was licensed for use in the video game Saint’s Row and became the calling card for the VLA’s signature sound. Not long after, the band went into the studio with Producer Marc Jordan(Rock Kills Kid) to record their second single “Terra Firma.” In the Summer of 2006 the song was entered into KROQ’s Inland Invasion contest, giving fans the opportunity to vote on-line and choose the opening band for Guns N’ Roses. Out of over 10,000 entries, "Terra Firma" made it into the top 10 and was selected by the KROQ programming department for regular rotation for 4 straight weeks.
Currently the band is hard at work with Billy Bush (Garbage, Beck) and Ran Pink (Fonogenic Studios) recording and mixing their first EP titled “Unhand Me, ICON!” The first single off the record, “When I am Through With You” was bought by Sony Music to be the official theme song for the new FX original series “Damages.” “Unhand Me ICON!” is a mix of both ‘post pop’ and ‘brit rock’ and is expected to appeal to a wide range of fans who not only love the sounds of the underground but that of larger acts also. Look for “Unhand Me ICON!” to be released in early 2008.
Glenn Close just won an Emmy for 'Best Actress' in a drama.
