The Orphans at The Vanguard for the Home Grown Roots 3 album launch
We're proud to announce that we'll be playing at The Vanguard in Newtown on Tuesday September 23 as part of The Home Grown Roots 3 album launch.
If you've been keeping up to date with The Orphans, you'll know that we've contributed the track Rain to Foghorn Records Home Grown Roots 3 compilation. The album is a showcase of original Australian roots music and includes tracks from Paul Kelly, John Butler, Ash Grunwald and Mia Dyson to name a few. Closer to home our friends Karl Broadie, The Yearlings and Natalie D Napoleon also contribute tracks. I've been listening to it non-stop for the last week and can vouch that this is a great collection. My personal favourite track (other than our own of course) is Central Coast duo, Nick and Liesel's track Wyong River.
We've been lucky enough to be invited to play as part of the Home Grown Roots 3 album launch at The Vanguard, which will also feature Chickenhead, Luke koteras, Natalie D Napoleon, Kristy Coote, and Nick and Liesl.
The Orphanage Sessions continue until the end of the year
Following on from the success of The Orphanage Sessions in the first half of this year, we have decided to continue for the rest of the year. Helping us out will be Lianna Rose, The Harmonators, Katie Briana, Racz 'n Waters and The Huckleberry Swedes.
For those who haven't been to an Orphanage Session, it's a great night of original country/roots music in one of Sydneys most intimate and personal venues - the Mars Hill Café.

The Orphans are a country/bluegrass outfit comprised of two very talented individuals: Nick Payne and Lyn Taylor.
Both born in Australia, but with very different musical roots. Nick and Lyn have brought their unique experiences and abilities to produce the distinct sound and feel that is The Orphan's music.
Growing up on Sydney's North Shore, Nick cut his musical teeth as a teenager in a series of garage bands. However, as both he and his musical abilities matures, his tendency to seek out music of a "less mainstream" ilk saw him develop an appreciation, and then a profound respect for the simple yet soulful acoustic roots style of bluegrass and country. Inspired by artists such as Gillian Welch and Ryan Adams, he formed The Orphans in early 2006.
In stark contrast, Lyn's life unfolded against the backdrop of country Queensland. Literally the "truckers wife", Lyn draws on her experiences of trial, isolation and distance from loved ones as the basis of her song writing and haunting vocal style. Displaying a similar sense of "less is more", Lyn's approach dovetails neatly with Nick's to create music that has been described as, and is literally: "Simply enjoyable".
As The Orphans, Nick and Lyn have performed to audiences in both Queensland and New South Wales, and are currently based in their hometown of Sydney.
