Praise for The Never and Antarctica
"There is much spry vigor and untested wisdom in many of the things that Smith sings on Antarctica" -Daytrotter.com
"Confident, competent, and altogether charming." -Delusions of Adequacy
"The blend of indie rock and chamber pop on The Never's concept album Antarctica is always grand but never grandiose: Every note is deployed in the interest of making the melodies as unforgettable as possible." -Brian Howe, The Independent
"There's something instantly endearing about a band that intentionally bucks trends. The inherent bravery required to step apart from the pack can be irresistible, especially when the music by the band in question is top-shelf quality." -Billboard
"The CD is fantastic—it’s poppy and orchestral in all the right places." -Pop Matters
"[The Never] had their go at a concept album, and, not only do they nail the mark, they’ve practically reinvented the idea." -Discorder
"Smith is an unheard of triple threat in rock: singer songwriter, children's author and illustrator."- Creem Magazine
"If you are not moved one way or another by Antarctica, you are not human." -Transform Online
THE PROJECT
The Never are currently touring in support of the release of their second long player album, entitled ANTARCTICA. It's a storybook album: a full length CD literally coupled with a fully illustrated storybook by guitarist Noah Smith. The story is centered around a young, naive boy named Paul and his journey to find the owner of a large bomb he finds near his home in the country. ANTARCTICA is a plea for everyone young and old to remember the simple things of childhood. The book also serves as a reminder to appreciate our world and the beauty it has to offer.
THE BOOK-art and words
"Far and away, paul's favorite thing
Is the tree on the hill with the tire swing
Its roots go deep through earth and green,
Bent by all the days it's seen
And in it's bark initials carved,
Surrounded by a deep cut heart..."
"...Gathered in mass in an empty lot
Are tired old men who have long since forgot.
Forgotten to love, forgotten to live
Forgotten to dream and forgotten to give..."

THE BAND
The Never are too ambitious. However, Noah Smith and brothers Jonny and Joah Tunnell have never seen that as a bad thing. Fueled by a ravenous disposition for creating adventurous pop music with audacious orchestral tendencies, the band’s last album was an epic concept album that included a 50-page, fully illustrated storybook. The band is now funneling all of that creative energy straight into the songwriting for their follow-up album. Guitarist Noah Smith’s soulful vocals soar over a patchwork of interesting musical textures created by the multi-instrumentalist Tunnell Brothers who supply plenty of drums, bass, organ, flute and two parts of the group’s gorgeous three-part harmonies. However, the primary focus of the music is absolute allegiance to the power of smart, intricately arranged pop songwriting. You might call The Never conventionalists from the future. You’ll hear the classic pop influence of bands like The Zombies and The Beach Boys, but it won’t sound familiar or traditional. The band’s signature lush sound stems from humble origins – all three members were home-schooled, bathed in barrels, had no indoor plumbing or electricity and it was this upbringing that fostered an appreciation for nature that is taken for granted. Drawing inspiration from these austere roots, the band promotes responsible environmental awareness by touring in a bus running on biodiesel as opposed to gasoline. They feel it is their obligation as a band who tours extensively to think of how it affects the rest of the world.
