About me:
The Mambo Mamas was an idea, almost a whim, conceived in the recesses of the mind of a Rubenesque woman named Abbey. A group of large-sized women dancing professionally went against the grain of everything she had been taught by her family and society: only thin women were sexy and attractive, only thin women could be dancers. After living her life believing these repressive thoughts, and with the encouragement of mentors like Eddie and Maria Torres, David Melendez, Angel Rodriguez and Manny Rentas, the young woman finally broke the chains which bound her mind.
Abbey had always loved dancing and performing so why not create her own dance company with other big women? At first, even she wasn't sure if it could really be done. Would audiences accept such a group? She decided to take her chances. She recruited two other plus-sized women and in 1993 they debuted as The Mambo Mamas at the old Club Broadway in New York City. The reaction of the crowd made it clear to her that she had made the right decision. As the team hit their final pose, the crowd of about 600 people jumped to their feet, a deafening roar filled the room and the roof nearly blew off the joint. From that day forth, The Mambo Mamas became a part of history.
Since 1993 the Mamas have accomplished a great deal. They have performed in all the major night clubs of NYC including Club Broadway, Latin Quarter, Club Broadway II, Side Street and the Copacabana. The ladies have graced stages at NYC landmarks such as the Southstreet Seaport and Grand Central Station on New Year's Eve. They have been featured on television several times; The Maury Povich Show, Sabado Gigante and Ocurrio Asi. The troupe also has had the privilege of performing at conventions in Italy, Puerto Rico, Los Angeles, Washington DC, Chicago and Denver.
The Mambo Mamas continue on the road to success. These large, lovely and talented women hope to show the world that dancing is for everyone: all backgrounds, all shapes and ALL SIZES!
