Featuring the Novel, Grotesque, Original and Surpassingly Melodious Band Entitled THE GREAT ADMIRERS
Bristol-based acoustic outfit The Great Admirers have built their reputation on sweet melodies, lacerating lyrics and the sweat-drenched frenzy of their live performances. Currently showcasing an 'arthouse folk' sound featuring guitar, flute, violin and Irish percussion, they have been dazzling audiences with their 'Famous Ladies' sequence – incisive and arresting songs about legendary females ranging from Cleopatra and Louise Brooks to Holly Golightly and Christina Aguilera.
'Everybody's Listening' - Live Performance
INTRODUCING THE GREAT ADMIRERS:
Led by vocalist/lyricist Pat Reid, the band consists of guitarist Paul Griffin, percussionist Paul Vallis, violinist Hannah Johns and flautist Becky Allen.
The Great Admirers often perform at Pete Gioconda's 'A Boatload Of Knees' music nights in Bristol. They also host their own series of 'Admiration' events, appearing alongside such kindred spirits as Badger Trap, Vincent Callan, Liz Kearton, Discoco and Rita Lynch - many of whom have at some time performed as members of The Great Admirers.
PLAUDITS FOR THE GREAT ADMIRERS:
"Venue magazine-lauded songsmith Pat Reid has re-grouped around guitarist Paul Griffin with an eclectic group of musicians to draw on his startling collection of songs..." – Bristol Acoustic Roots Singer-Songwriter Festival
"They have a unique sound and the oddest of line-ups, with three guitarists, a bongo (sic) player, a bodhran player who doubles on recorder and, in Pat Reid, a singer with almost frightening intensity. It was a bit ramshackle but nonetheless enjoyable, and you've got to admire a band that manages to namecheck Julian Cope in a song about Keynsham." – Keith Clark, Bristol Evening Post
"'Frankie' is The Great Admirers convivially sharing a dry sherry with The Fall and The Velvet Underground with Nancy Sinatra endeavouring to work an ice machine for the very first time... In my humbled opinion, it is a Top 20 chart hit. Truly. Quite fantastic." – James Maker
"C86-referencing troupe... wherein knowingly small-scale muses are given a splendidly passionate evocation." – Venue magazine
Sweet, harsh, sinister, funny and atmospheric." – Catherine Foster, The Bath Chronicle
"A thing of dramatic beauty... Insistent, fuzzy guitars backed by tambourine beat and dreamy girl backing vocals are overlaid with Spector-ish production. And, of course, those affecting, reedy-but-impassioned lead vocals." – Julian Owen, Venue magazine
'Shortarse' - Live Performance
"The Great Admirers' new release, 'The Keynsham EP', is essentially Pat Reid backed by lately returned Bristol shoegazers Secret Shine, and an utter stonker it is too: blessed with a wit that largely seems to have passed the current crop by, the spindly energy of C86 at its height, and sumptuous, soaring femme-shaped backing vocals." – Venue magazine
"Breathtaking performance, truly mesmerising. My new favourite group..." – Hannah, Cute Loony
"...Filling my ears with swoony electro-pop before taking me right back to acoustic earth at the finale. I wanted more, more, more..." – Marianne Hyatt
"Audiences can expect thrashed acoustic guitars, angelic harmonies and a sweat-drenched performance from besuited, poetry-spewing frontman Pat Reid." – www.the-croft.com
"Pat Reid is a consummate performer who likes to test the feedback levels of any PA and the durability of mic stands everywhere…" – www.acousticnight.com

The Atomic Rays are back at The Prom on Saturday night (2/8/08).
Always a good rockin' night.
Four of your Earth pounds on the door.
Harbour Festival be damned!
It'll be raining anyway...
Even if it's not, what could be better to do as it all winds up for the day than wandering up the Gloucester Road for a bit the old "flamboyance, theatre and energy" (TM) that only The Rays are going to give you.
And remember if it's really hot, the Prom is the only Bristol gig venue with air conditioning so it's the place to be.
(Well there is some blowy thing in the ceiling that really does keep it quite cool so I assume that counts as air conditioning)
Hey Great Admirers, have a great gig tonight at the Fleece. I like the new sound, the video clip on your latest bulletin is fabulous.
Good to see you on Friday, Pat, a good evening with you & David at 0 degrees & the Fleece. When I walked past it in the cold light of day .. a sunny Saturday morning it looked like the legendary Bristol music venue I remembered :-)
Hi Pat and Co. Thanks for having us at Admiration on saturday. We really enjoyed it despite our weakened constitutions from the previous evenings show. Suzy Condrad was amazing, as usual, and Cute Loony are really rather good too, aren't they?!
THANKS FOR HAVING US LAST NIGHT - I LOVE YOU GUYS SOOOOO MUCH - YOUR MUSIC PUTS A BIG SMILE ON MY FACE AND MAKES MY KNEES KNOCKEDY KNOCK KNOCK ... HNA D'LOONYNESS X
