The Gecko Brothaz Release Their Debut Album, From Dusk Till Dawn
Tha Gecko Brothaz are a duo of lyrically skilled, multifaceted Harlem-born and raised artists who have an undying respect for hip-hop as a culture and an art form. Namely, they are Priest Forever and John O. Priest Forever is a member of KRS-ONE’s legendary B.D.P. crew and was a member of another group called Buffalo Soldiers, that released an album in 1991. He has written and produced tracks for several established recording artists and even had his song "Hush" featuring KRS-ONE, placed on the "Tony Hawk Pro Skater" video game. Priest was featured as a finalist in VH1’s Hip Hop Honors Freestyle 59 contest. In addition, he is also a co-host/mix-show DJ of WHCR 90.3 FM’s "Equilibrium Radio."
John O. made his mark in the hip-hop arena in 1991 as well with the release of his debut single "The Underground" on Mercury Records (then recording under Jay BUM). Since then he has released various mixtapes, including 2002’s "The John O. Mixtape." John O. is also a recognized actor, having starred on several television shows ("E.R.," "The Practice," "Helldate") and in major motion pictures including The Legend of Simon Conjurer, co-starring alongside Academy Award-winner Jon Voight.
Priest Forever and John O. decided to form a group after collaborating on various mixtape projects. They decided to name themselves Tha Gecko Brothaz (as in the Quentin Tarantino flick), but the title that they boast is the fact that they are "Harlem’s Most Dangerous Emcees," because of what they bring to the game. "John is a real emcee," says Priest. "Real emcees respect real emcees. O is a student of the heart of hip-hop." John O recognizes Priest as "indescribable. The sh-t is mad dope, mad fire. I’m old-school, and with Priest, his sentences don’t breathe . . . it’s a killer flow."
Presently, Tha Gecko Brothaz are releasing their double-disc album, From Dusk Til’ Dawn, as an antidote to the current state of hip-hop. However, as Priest notes, "we weren’t trying to murder anybody. We wanted to make a feel-good album for the audience that listens to hip-hop. Everyone will listen to this album and find something they like." One of the tracks that they are most proud of is "Harlem’s Finest," an uptown twist on the famous 1996 Notorious B.I.G. and Jay-Z hit.
The Gecko Brothaz have chosen to release their album via Internet, turning down an option to release their album on a major record label. Not only did this decision grant them total artistic control over their album’s direction, it also grants listeners more accessibility to their music. You can find From Dusk Till Dawn on Itunes, other online retail web sites, and Priest Forever’s own website, priestforever.net.
