ORGAN MAGAZINE 08
"THE DeBRETTS – The Rage (download) - Feisty jaunty spiky female-fronted new wave mellodic refined pop punk rock music from London town. Refined feistiness mind you, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Angel Cage and Siouxsie Sue and a restrained take a little walk kind of breath-taking rage. Fronted by Miss Vonnie DeBrett and her angelic demon-wearing twists"
XFM MUSIC REPONSE LIVE NIGHT
"The deBtretts played Indiesexual at Catch 10th May 2007 and stole they show with their theatrical performance by the stunning Vonnie, flying around the stage and venue like a crazy girl possessed, shoeless and completely brilliant in everyway, shrieking out blinding tunes like ‘is it me’ and ‘hole in the head’ with a vocal performance resembling Bjork on a high!
The deBtretts bring a venue and crowd alive, they're defiantly ones to watch, expect big things from these guys, they won’t disappoint!
IN THE CITY MOBILE ACT UNSIGNED REVIEW
“The deBretts are playing one of the best sets of the day. Their front woman is amazing to watch, sounding like a cross between Debbie Harry and Siouxie Sioux, we can’t take our eyes off her”
STUART M THE MAG
"The deBretts' brilliance is fast outstripping my ability to find new superlatives for them, Gorgeous on record but awe-inspiring live, they will take your heart by force"
ARTROCKER
"Vonnie is the star attraction- backed up by a throbbing urgent three piece, the vocal deliveries are slung out at the crowd with a mixture of revulsion and adoration, a combination that certainly leaves the audience enthralled. Definitely ones to watch!”
BBC
"The deBretts, however, might blow the boys out of the water with their female-fronted post-punk. Part Blondie, part Yeah Yeah Yeahs, part maniacal stage shows, The deBretts have won the hearts of many a music fan despite their mere year together. The deBretts might just have what it takes to gain the edge over their fellow contestants."
SMASH MUSIC
"Kicking off the first night of unknown acts desperate for the opportunity to perform at the V Festival were The Debretts, and boy did they kick it off! With a tight punky sound and an excitable female lead singer, comparisons to Blondie and the more recent Yeah Yeah Yeahs are expected but these guys are far from a covers band and are definitely ones to watch. "
JEFFREY LEACH PRESENTER
"With an in-your-face live performance and catchy tunes that will stay with you for weeks, this woman fronted four piece are sure to become a favourite if experienced at one of their amazing live shows'
OXJAM
"It seems all the hard work is beginning to pay off…They have built up a huge following during their short year together, winning the hearts of many, with their post punk sound, tight and manic stage shows, infectious songs and total charm."
THIS IS FAKE DIY-SUPPORTING THE NOISETTES
"The Debretts possess an armoury of catchy sing-a-long rock-pop-punk songs. ‘A Hole In The Head’ will get inside yours and take up residence like a friend who has been there forever and ‘Is It Me Or Is It You’ has a chorus that Blondie would be proud of. Fuelled with energy and passion a band that claims this is their fifth gig seems to have a very bright future fast approaching. Tonight may have started off about a certain Leeds band but in the end it belonged to The Debretts”
UK MUSIC SEARCH
"Rattling along with post-punk haste and belting out cool pop classics like there's no tomorrow, The deBretts are a band you should be starting to get excited about. A glorious collision between Blondie, Ladytron and Be Your Own Pet, if The deBretts don't become your new favourite band within minutes of hearing them, then go buy a hearing aid.”
FORTY SHADES OF NOISE
"In a short space of time, unsigned post-punk four-piece, The deBretts, have been making waves on the live scene. Lead singer Vonnie, makes a theatrical entrance for their headline set at The Barfly, as she takes the stage in feathered mask, short dress and stocking feet. She starts belting out the first song “I Love To Hate You.” Between squeaky screams and angst-ridden brooding, she reminds us of Bjork and Siouxsie Sioux.
The high energy of this band is infectious. Vonnie jumps around the small stage like it’s a trampoline, while screaming her way through the song “Hole In The Head.” The near capacity crowd are jumping around with her in full adoration of her performance.
They slow it down briefly with a new song, “Wage My War.” They don’t lose any of the crowd with the change in tempo, proving this art-rocker band have got the style and substance that will get them the attention they rightly deserve.
The remainder of the set seems even faster. Vonnie pours a pint of water over her head to cool down. Drummer Leon looks like he’s going to explode from the concentration while trying to keep up with the set finale “We Go Together.” The entire crowd is now jumping and the floor is shaking under foot.
TRASHQUEEN MAGAZINE
"Vonni, the lead singer of The DeBretts, beckoned us to come a little closer to the stage before she sang, jumped around, and held the people at the front (mostly male) enthralled. The other three members produced the soundtrack to the most wonderful, energetic, infectious punk/post-punk/new wave fun I'd heard in a long time. Songs like 'Porn Star', 'It's Not Me, It's You', and 'You're An Animal' got the crowd (and me) moving. You must must must see The DeBretts the next time they're playing near you - you'll love them. "
THIS IS FAKE DIY
"The Debretts are an entirely different proposition a traditional band set up led by a diminutive presence who embarks the stage unbecoming and gracious, yet during the set like a coiled spring she bears a similarity to a tazmanian devil whirling around the confined stage. Whilst between songs engages in audience chat that would warm her to the affections of anyone."
Resembling a fusion of Republica with the passion and mirth of the Dresden Dolls The Debretts possess an armoury of catchy sing-a-long rock-pop-punk songs.
Apparently girls don’t just want to have fun anymore now they want to start a rock band and tear up venues the length and breadth of the country. Sheffield’s The Long Blondes may be leading the way but DIY may have just seen the procession that are hot on their heals. Tonight may have started off about a certain Leeds band but in the end it belonged to The Debretts. "
THE MAG
"It's cool for a while, as the set is front-loaded with their best material, but by the time they start on a sweet doo-woppy ballad, only to pause and then - wuntoofreefour! - launch into yet another bastard-son-of-Last-Nite chugalug, it's exasperating. There's promise here, but please, more variety.
Mind you, they could have been the Strokes and still had trouble matching what comes next as The DeBretts are one serious prospect.
World, meet Ms Vonnie DeBrett, a vision of feather masks, high kicks and attitude. Think Tyson as ballerina, a violent, pirouetting spirit who at any moment might tear the roof off and show us the stars. There's a building tension here, something elemental that's too big for a small space. Those who bandy influences talk of Blondie (the hooks are that good, the band is that tight) and Siouxsie. Myself, I'm put in mind of Patti Smith as Vonnie stalks the stage and indeed the audience, invading their space and staring them out. She riffs on lines and ideas, and punky soundbites like 'Is It Me or Is It You' are stretched into epics. When she tells the happily terrorised front row 'there's no need to be afraid of me', it's the most charming lie imaginable. I'm writing this from memory, by the way. I didn't dare get my notebook out during the gig She would have eaten it.
The deBretts is the star to hitch your fantasies to tonight. Get on board.'"
INDIE MP3
"On first listen you could be forgiven for thinking that The Debretts are another NYC band such is their sound. The truth is however that they hail from West London and recorded their first demo in May 2007. They are going to be compared with the likes of Blondie, The Ramones and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Lead singer Vonnie's vocals dominate whilst the rest of the band produce a full on background noise to match.
This is music that is raw and infectious as all good music is meant to be."

London-based, The deBretts, already heralded by Artrocker magazine as “ones to watch,” and fronting the cover of this months Tour Dates, are a four-piece post punk-pop band with an infectious blend of Blondie/ Siouxie Sioux cool, Sex Pistols urgency and Yeah Yeah Yeahs credibility. The explosive live shows have become something of a legend and now they are ready to make their highly anticipated arrival onto our radars.
Debut single: “The Rage” is taken from a collection of 6 tracks recorded earlier this year for their Ep “Arbiters of Etiquette” which began with PJ Harvey’s engineer: Ali Chant in Toybox Studios, Bristol. From this instrumental production it then crossed overseas to Berlin to be vocally polished by Gordon Raphael the mastermind behind The Strokes debut album. Additional tracks were also produced by Paul Epworth production accomplice: Elliot James (Bloc Party, Kate Nash, White Rose Movement) and Pedro Ferriera (The Darkness). You could say the proof is in the pudding…….
At the tender age of just four gigs old, the deBretts found themselves on tour with the Noisettes; they have now played with a plethora of bands including The Futureheads, The Holloways and the Mystery Jets. Gigging is their middle name touring in Austria, Paris and Rome on top of that making the finals for last years Camden Crawl and Road To V.
With just one demo to their name, the deBretts have managed to secure themselves a huge amount of radio support from XFMS Ian Camfields Unsigned winners, John Kennedy, Steve Harris, Huw Stephens on Radio 1, BBC Radio Oxford, all this combined with overseas airplay on various radio stations in Austria, France, Germany, U.S.A, Mexico and Japan.
This is a band whose mission statement was to stay off the radar and play gigs to become a better live act before choosing the right time to strike, a band who have been stalked by every A&R man you could squeeze into a small place avoiding being signed at all costs, until they felt that they were ready to announce their arrival.
“The deBretts are ready for you....are you ready for them?”
The deBretts are currently in the studio writing, rehearsing and recording.
