Wales’ best kept secret? Probably not, that award must surely go to the whereabouts of the Free Wales Army’s cache of guns buried (and lost) in 1969. But what little there is known about David Mysterious makes most people hungry for more…
His debut bi-lingual E.P. Troubadour of the Unknown brought forth a fuzzy hi-fi meets lo-fi world of 60s garage, Morricone soundtracks, off kilter folk and a lyrical world containing detectives, space cats and carnival oddities. His hotly anticipated debut album continues this trend with stalkers, pirates and zombie curses, although Mr Mysterious denies any attempt at creating deliberately obtuse lyrics;
“I just write pop songs.” – David Mysterious 12/10/07
The E.P. found support from Huw Stephen’s Radio 1 show, Radio Cymru’s C2, Radio Wales’ Bethan & Huw show and The Adam Walton Show. He has recorded radio sessions for C2, Bethan & Huw and Adam Walton and has recorded both sessions and a video for S4C’s Bandit. He has played numerous gigs both in England and Wales and has been lucky enough to share bills with, among others, Art Brut, The Hot Puppies, The Crimea, Threatmantics and Jakokoayk.
The new album is to be released on the steadily expanding Peski label in the first quarter of 2008 and will be accompanied by a tour of the oft neglected Isle of Man. It remains to be seen whether this idea is genius or madness…or both. Or in fact a total fabrication.
His solo show comfortably recreates these intricate pieces via live looping, a variety of odd effects and a gut full of whiskey that lifts him out of the murky sea of the traditional one man and his guitar acts. The live David Mysterious experience often leaves crowds excited but confused: needless to say, this was not David’s aim.
Wrth cwrs mae Dai Dirgel yn sgwennu caneuon yn cymraeg hefyd a mae'r albwm newydd yn llawn o tiwns sydd yn dilyn, ac yn ymladd, Caradog Puw. Cadw dy llygyd agor am dai yn cwharae gigs o gwmpas Cymru yn y dyfodol agos!
Here's what the people say;
"This five track set leaves the listener curious and keen to hear more as he experiments with unexpected note and key combinations and uses original, tangential off-the-wall lyrics" - Soundnation
"David Mysterious makes the most excellent, unusal sounding music"- Huw Stephens, Radio 1
"a treat indeed!"- Record Collector Magazine
"Mr. Mysterious looked like a cross between Hunter S. Thompson and a friendly village butcher..." - Decode Magazine
