CRITICAL ACCLAIM FOR THE CICHLIDS:

“After garnering rave reviews and establishing a reputation for sexually charged live shows, the Cichlids released one record and promptly broke up. This weekend, they return for their first show in more than 20 years...”
New Times, January 25, 2007

“The Cichlids are rapidly becoming the hottest new wave act in South Florida. Their performance is enough to convert even the most anti-new waver into a real punk.”
Rag, August 1979

“The music is pounding, incessant, and driving…the lyrics are among the best in the genre…”
Billboard, 1980

“The Cichlids now seem to be head and shoulders above the rest of the South Florida scene in drawing a crowd and driving them crazy.”
Good Times, September 18, 1979

“In just about five months of playing area clubs and colleges, the Cichlids have become one of the area's most talked-about bands.”
The Miami Herald, October 1979

“The Cichlids are the slickest, most commercially viable of the South Florida punk bands. They're also the most popular, testified to by the fact that their gala Halloween appearance at Peaches will be broadcast live on WSHE.”
Sun-Sentinel, October 5, 1979

“At the forefront of this area rock renaissance is a Dania foursome called The Cichlids.”
Sun-Tattler, October 26, 1979

“…to those hungry for something fresh, The Cichlids were the first indication that the spirit of bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols would finally be felt in South Florida.”
Fort Lauderdale News, December 28, 1979

“Cichlids have taken their name from an aggressive variety of tropical fish known to raise their young in their mouths. Band displays the primitive and bizarre tendencies the name suggests.”
Variety, January 2, 1980

“(Be True to Your School) is one of those important albums that often get lost in the shuffle.”
Billboard, May 24, 1980

“The entire group put on another impressive performance, which proves the fact that lately this band can do no wrong.”
Agora News, June 1980

“Two boys and two girls play irrepressibly fun tunes for teenagers of all ages.”
Record World, 1980

“South Florida's punk soundtrack for the era was supplied by the Cichlids, the Eat, and the Reactions.”
New Times, October 16, 2003

   About The Cichlids
With Debbie (Mascaro) DeNeese on guitar and vocals, Bobby Tak on drums and vocals, Susan (Robins) Bartel on bass, and Allan Portman on guitar and vocals, South Florida got its first taste of The Cichlids’ fury at Musician’s Exchange in August 1979. They quickly built a large and rabid fan base, playing venues such as the Agora Ballroom, Tight Squeeze, the Treehouse, and Premier AOR. Hearing the buzz and taking a chance on the new punk movement, disco label TK Records signed the fledgling band. Their album, Be True to Your School, was released in 1980 with cover shots by Rolling Stone magazine photographer Lynn Goldsmith. The single, “Lifeguard Dan,” was backed with “Bubble Gum” and the previously unreleased “Tourists Are Pink.” The Cichlids soon became the go-to opening act, often upstaging the national and international headliners such as Iggy Pop, Ramones, The Police, and Pretenders. As is so often the unfortunate case when success brings too much too soon, internal differences caused Allan to depart not long after the album was released, and Susan left a few months later. Soon after that, The Cichlids officially disbanded.

As fate would have it, the filming of a documentary about the South Florida music scene proved to be the catalyst for a reunion show on May 20, 2007 at "The Scene" in Pompano Beach, FL, with original members Debbie DeNeese, Bobby Tak, and Allan Portman, joined by longtime friend Rob Remias and with a guest appearance by former Cichlid Barry Seiver, taking the stage for the first time in 27 years.

A long long time ago four young talented young adults had a dream. We would live that dream for a short time. We would leave a mark that in some ways still live today. Now middle aged we all have gone different directions and a couple have managed to live through the good and the bad times and stay in music together but head in a different direction.

Unfortunately for me I was the one who moved from the Ft Lauderdale area. I'm the Texas Cichlid and proud to be called it. Put aside all the bullshit, the back stabbing within the inner circle, the poor choices we all made, the should haves, could haves, would haves, it was all worth it. We lived once at the top of our game. We even got to live it one more time in a documentary just last year. Before that documentary I would have give 1 million to 1 odds I'd never play with the Cichlids again. Just goes to show miracles do happen. I thought then, how many people can say they're bands opened up for the Ramones, Iggy Pop, The Police, The Pretenders. Not too many. But like life it all happened so fast that not one of us young adults really knew what was happening to us. And before we knew it it was over. As a match striking, it burned with such fury and so fast and bright it just had burn out as fast.
Then the Cichlids just faded away.

But don't count us out. We may not be together but we still have dreams and mine is to get to where I should have gotten 28 years ago. That one glorious moment that pays for all the work and dues we've paid as musicians. I wish all the Cichlids the same success. I only hope that everything bad can be forgotten and everything good can be used to build on a future. I love you Debbie, I love Susan, and even you Bobby. Hope at some time we all sit down and just jam, the four of us. It would be great. Maybe when were 80 and can't remember why we can't seem to get along with each other.
