Finding musical influences in the Pixies and Devo, and combining it with a fervid live show, Alvin, TX's the Black Math Experiment formed in 2004 when guitarist the Amazing Bill Curtner assembled a band mostly through online classified advertisements.
With his friend Chris Soliz on keyboard, Christi Vest and Jef "With One F" Rouner singing, Brian Coleman drumming, and Captain Matt "Mongo" Nelson playing bass, the band quickly became popular in the Houston music scene with their theatrical performances, irreverent lyrics, and guitar-driven rock songs.

The group's first record, 2005's four song EP What We Do...Is Secret, was sold packaged in manilla envelopes. Later that year they released their first full-length, Fake Words and Signs from Space. The album earned them radio play on Houston rock stations and their "You Cannot Kill David Arquette" -- about the actor's penchant for playing death-proof characters -- became a signature song. Arquette himself loved it and has become a huge supporter and promoter of the band.

Last Transmissions from the Blue Room came out in 2006 and the group's reach expanded to even further unexpected places. "Ology," with its Weezer-esque power chord riff and punchy keyboard, has worked its way into the kindergarten curriculum in Hsinchu, Taiwan to help teach colors and geometric shapes. All You Need Is Blood followed in 2007, and the album cut "Suit of Lights," a somber six-minutes of distortion and harmonizing vocals, became the band's signature finale at live shows.

In 2008 the band went on hiatus as Curtner, Rouner, and Nelson all became fathers, and Vest (formerly Lain) married, but at the mid-point of 2009 Rouner announced the band would re-form for some live shows and possible new recordings. ~ Jeremy Shulkin
