Sweet Reason's Interests
|
| General | Trying different foods from around the world (Famous for wondering, "Hmmmm, could I copy this at home?(... straying off beaten paths... friendship... movie nights w/ friends... art junky (running out of wall space)... choosing the perfect gift...and, and, and ;) | | Music | Right now, anything by Fred Frith. Tuvan throat-singing is cool too. A frind gave me Springsteen's "Seger Sessions" & mow I eant to try Ghost of Tom Joad". I also listen to the Humanist Network News Podcast. You can call the HNN listener comment line and ask me for advice. Once I have enough audio questions, I'll do an audio version of my advice column!
| | Movies | Gimme people I care about - forget the special effects (except nature photography)
Asked about "5 movies that changed your life" I came up with a list that might be different on a different day:
I can't say any film has changed my life, but Angela's Ashes stands out for me as the first film that ever helped me empathize with an alcoholic character. I'm enjoying foreign films a lot these days. Australiz made films are really different, but I don't need subtitles
I liked Magnolia a lot, & wondered how the child actors were treated in this film that explored the many, often subtle ways children can be abused or exploited. My favorite line was probably Jason Robards' saying not to let people take away your regrets.
Lone Star & A Day without a Mexican gave me some insight, I think, into how Latino immigration is changing our country. I liked the humor of Day Without, & the message that identity is a matter of heart, not "blood".
I like Australian films I've seen because they're outside the Hollywood mold. Keeps my mind open.
Thanks for asking, Jason!
| | Television | Too busy with books, people, column, causes. What causes, you ask?
Humanism, reproductive rights, PFLAG & marruage equality, evolution, separation of government & religion... for starters ;) | | Books | Current & recent reading: Descartes' Error(Not about philosophy), & the story of Kona coffee farmers through the generations, and a book about how evangelical churches handle domestic violence. Thre Yiddisf Policemen's Union, Finding Flow, The Altruistic Personality...
Are you kidding? I just bought around 40 discounted books at a store that was closing. I have books everywhere but the bathtub and the oven. Today I feel like a good girl cuz I didn't stop at the science fiction bookstore near the mom&pop grocey where I picked up ricotta, candied ginger, & fresh corn. I'm reading 5 different books right now. Okay, okay, try Yellow-Lighted Bookstore (Buzbee), or The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay (Chabon), or MonkeyLuv (Sapolsky), or … okay, okay, I'll stop. | | Heroes | Ordinary people who rise to extraordinary challenges — like the people who took their boats into New Orleans to rescue Katrina survivors … Holocaust survivors … my grandparents |

About me:
What is Sweet Reason?
please also visit: http://sweetreason.org
I write Sweet Reason -- an advice column for nonreligious people & the people who love them. It's published in Humanist Network News, the weekly e-zine of the Institute for Humanist Studies. (Yup, I love to network!)
I've finally (November 2006) decided to make my blog about 2 topics:
* Women of Humanism -- throughout history, & w/ pics in my gallery
* Books & movies I'm thinking about -- with plenty about evolution
What is humanism?
Humanism is a philosophy of life inspired by humanity and guided by reason. Millions of people around the world embrace humanist values for fuller, more joyful lives without supernatural belief in gods, heaven or hell. Are you a humanist?
