About me: This shop specializes in hand pulled “Victrola” coffee, pastries, and house made Panini, and is dedicated to providing fresh, and locally made products. In addition to the beautiful coffee and dazzling staff, Suburbia offers free wireless internet, a book lending library, games, magazines, rotating monthly art events, and diverse music & art events (and has included: bluegrass sing-alongs, open mic nights, jazz, local indie rock, and local anti-folk legend Kimya Dawson).
Suburbia Coffee opened its doors on February 7th 2007. The coffee shop is located at 218 West Meeker St., in the art deco Boulderon building, at the heart of downtown Kent. Art deco furniture, and period light fixtures reference the buildings 1930 date. “We attempted to create a place that is part nostalgic movie soda shoppe, part nana’s rec room, and part old timey pub.” The purpose of this business is more than coffee; it is in effort to create a classic community third place; in the midst of sprawling and identical strip malls.
The business is family owned; Adrienne and Frank Peck were high school sweethearts (19 years ago). Sisters Adrienne & Jill run the shop day and night (with the aid a few precious employees), while Frank works full time making custom furniture for local artist Roy Mcmakin. You might spy 2 ½ year old Beatrice Peck disorganizing teapots behind the counter….or Haley (Jill’s childhood Best Friend) filling in on Panini duty.
It is the goal Suburbia to foster a unique and diverse community; outside of the overpriced city…to redefine the Suburbs (and the City of Kent)…”We mortgaged the house to build a community living-room.”
