About Stephen Duffy and The Lilac Time
Whilst being photographed on the Malvern Hills in 1991 the Lilac Time were believed lost as dense fog separated them from each other and the world. Founder members Stephen and Nick Duffy found their way back down into Herefordshire to make the album Looking For A Day In The Night in 1999, but it was only recently that rhythm section Michael Giri & Micky Harris returned to safety. Unaware that the war was over and had started again they were shocked to find The Lilac Time were about to release their 8th album Runout Groove and furthermore were due on stage at the Green Man festival. A return to the stage complicated by a fall Michael took whilst missing which resulted in him being convinced he was the drummer in Slade. New recruits Melvin Duffy and Claire Worrall (Lilacs for a mere 14 years in total) helped him re-learn the Lilac canon by weaving a helpful tapestry out of cashmere and twigs. I remember the rainy Sunday morning in November the day before The Lilac Time's eponymous debut album scorched into our collective consciousness. As the copies arrived at Swordfish records fresh from the pressing plant we opened the windows and the music fluttered across the backs of the other shops on Hurst Street – there were no complaints as no one was there. A story repeated over the course of the next releases; Paradise Circus (voted 187th in the top 150 records no one has ever heard by the Guardian) & Love For All (produced by the legendary psych pop maestro Arnold Cumquat) Astronauts (released on the iconic Primal Snot label) before the fog descended. On their return they have released the above mentioned Looking For A Day In The Night, lilac6 (both on Greasy Spoon) and Keep Going. Creating such waves and interweb hoo-hah that they are the priority signing to nouveau industry tastemakers Bogus Frontage. Ladies and gentleman I give you Stephen Duffy & The Lilac Time – celebrating the decline of traditional values for over twenty years. (From the desk of Dean Spence - friend of the Lilac Time)
