Southpaw Jones treads lightly on the thin ice of irreverent honesty. Being left-handed, he naturally turns his guitar upside-down to make playing more comfortable. Being a creative little brother, he naturally turns the world upside-down to make his audience less comfortable. Southpaw has plied his trade in Houston, Nashville, and Los Angeles, but he now calls Austin home, performing each Wednesday at Café Mundi and reaching out to find those open-minded folks who thirst for singable melodies and one-of-a-kind lyrics.
Southpaw has had the honor of opening shows for Eliza Gilkyson, Dan Bern, Slaid Cleaves, James McMurtry, Terri Hendrix, and Shake Russell, performing in legendary venues like Austin's Cactus Café and Nashville's Bluebird Café. He has performed with 5 instruments in 17 states during the past 10 years, but who's counting?
While most comfortable in front of an intimate crowd of committed listeners, Southpaw is at home on stages big and small. In a world of men with guitars he stands out, singing about The Cruelty of Teenage Girls, The Last Remaining Beatle, White Boy Blues, a Moon Whore, and the theory that girls with amnesia are Hot So Hot. He makes listeners laugh, cry, and think, often within a single song.
Great show tonight, wish I could've stayed for the second set.
Love the CD as well, some of my favorite songs of yours on there. I love the line: "I was your secret Santa. We had a $15 limit. I bought a diamond bracelet. Then I got nervous and returned it." That line kills me every time.
I thought Raina Rose was cool already, but now that I know she's been seen in the company of the esteemed Southpaw Jones it is no longer a thought but a know... I'm in the know... now, to get in the loop... here loop-y loop-y loop-y....
Just dropping by to say hi! And thanks for the personalized sticky note you sent with the cd I ordered - you're awesome! :) Looking forward to seeing you play live sometime soon! - Amanda
We don't really know each other or anything, personally, but I did see you perform at Cafe Mundi in Austin several times about 2 years ago, usally with Seelah and Matt The Electrician. I'm not exaggerating when I say that you are still my idol, not just in terms of your musical talents, but in your ability to crank out song after song.
With that said, I have some new songs on my page. They're not at all in the same genre, but you might like them. I'm in the process of remixing almost all of my songs, but the 3 available for free play are what I would consider "done". Enjoy!!!
Let's play a game. It's called "Find 2 references to Southpaw on Jaycee's MySpace Page!" Thanks for the limerick, hot-stuff. I love it. And PS-- I actually had amnesia earlier this year. No joke. It was kind of hot.
Lovin' the holiday spirit you've got goin' on there Paw. Nice sweater. Sending you merry vibes and good cheer from Chicago. And maybe a snowflake or two.
