Accept no substitutes. Brian is a the lead web developer for an obscure agency in one of the states of the former confederacy. "I'll give you a hint: 'Ay-eeee'," Brian says with a characteristic twinkle in his eye. From the large beer, the high score at NTN trivia and the ragged clothes, I deduced that he was not from here and was a liberal.
"Thank God!" he said with a gesture poised between cranky frustration and nihilistic surrender, the nearly-full Pilsner of beer in his hand coming dangerously close to spilling.
"No," he continued after pressing in the answer into his Playmaker, "I'm from Wisconsin. Look at that," he says gesturing at another screen above the bar. At first it looked like a solid grey picture, as my eyes adjusted I realized it was a snowy scene, on an overcast day in a grey city. "Milwaukee," he explains " God I miss it. It would be a day like that and I would be trying to shoot someones student film. I remember one time I acted all heroic and took off my jacket to blimp the camera... It's James Joyce." He is interrupted by the trivia game. "Yeah, the trick is a good hat. I had one of those Russian style numbers with rabbit fur lining."
He continues like this for a while, reminiscing about film school in Milwaukee, pausing for the questions on the screen above until he accidentally fell off his stool spilling beer on bystanders.
