Lying on the floor of my second story apartment, I hear the rushing sshh of the ocean. I am too far inland for it to be that great pacific beast pawing the shoreline with its salty caps. Inland by half a mile, I'm separated by a wall of dozens of man-made stalactites. They stretch to the flight corridors and seen from there they form a corpulent dollar sign. No sound is getting through that. No, the rush I hear is from a shopping cart. Its wheels, near to giving out, were not designed for cracks and pavement. It humps more weight too. Objects bulge out the open diamonds in its plastic frame. A tarp is common. Beyond that it's a Vegas warehouse of gee-gaws, aluminum cans, and crap. One is topped with a bed-sheet American flag, sun-bleached, its bars the ruled lines for a script, its letters with shapes like burnt bacon. The rushing sound comes irregularly through the days and nights like the trains before Mussolini. They always pass one at a time. The only time they're seen in pairs is under the larger bus stops, ones with several benches and roof. One of these is up the street from me. Behind it is a school. The city set concrete dividers into the bench tops. It makes them difficult to lay on. But this stop remains popular with the carts. There are two or more dozing when I pass just as rush hour is dying down. The rush sounds during the hot days if the traffic doesn't mask it. At night it is less frequent and therefore more distinct. Pre-dawn is sshhless. There are no carts anywhere. They haul themselves out of the city and up the mountainsides. They stand together like penguins, silent and facing different ways. They take turns giving the signal. At it's sound they come speeding down, unseen and so unjudged, their faces beaming revolutionary rhetoric, their demons gagged with giggles and yahoos.
E is for Elsa who choked on a peach.
