About me:
..
Shuga Mama Shekeres is revolutionizing the art of shekere making. Now you can have your very own, hand crafted, uniquely designed, Nigerian style shekere, created with you in mind. A shekere is a beaded gourd; a percussion instrument used around the world but mainly in Africa and South America. It has a very unique sound and stands out beautifully in all types of music including folk, hip hop, reggae, soul, jazz and of course African and Latino.
Shuga Mama's was developed by Zakiyyah McKelven and Janet McDonald (who is also a member of the vivacious "Voices Of Africa" Choral & Percussion Ensemble, an all female a cappella and West African Percussion Group out of Philadelphia). Both artist play shekere professionally and concentrate on creating beautiful, professional quality shekeres.
Now you can have your very own, custom, original design. Please browse through our photos if you'd like some inspiration or contact us directly with you ideas. Not only do you get to choose your bead color(s), you can also choose the size of your gourd, the color string, whether you'd like it to be painted, polished or have a specific design or design theme. We work closely with our clients to make sure they get the shekere of their dreams.
Also, don't forget to check out what's in stock! We are always producing more unique designs so please be sure to have a look at our IN STOCK photo album.
Who I'd like to meet: Interesting people who love great music and percussion. Also those interested in finding out more about us and everything Shekere!
We teach classes and workshops on how to play and make shekeres as well. So if you already have one or wanted to purchase one from us and you don't know how to play it, we will teach you.
Currently we are designing shekere carry bags, shekere making kits, hand bags and other gourd art. We also have a selection of one of a kind jewelry, hand crafted by Janet McDonald.
